Illinois’ medical cannabis, recreational cannabis and h**p laws have been stuck in the mud for years, but that ends tonight.

Since I served as the Illinois medical cannabis director nearly 15 years ago, I have never given up on helping patients get access to their medicine. This bill will allow patients to buy at nearly every dispensaries around the state, allow telemedicine for certification, and lots more.

Onward to the Senate and then the Governor!

It’s the FINAL day of the Illinois General Assembly’s Spring Legislative Session.

Happy to kick it off with my friend, State Representative Kyle Moore.

That means we’re in for a LONG day at the Capitol to pass a balanced budget, and a lot of other laws on the cusp of passage (I’ll be focused on protecting medical cannabis patients, banning guns in polling places, and more). Let’s Go!!!

We took an important step toward tackling Illinois’ pension debt.

In partnership with State Senator Robert Martwick, we passed legislation to extend the bipartisan, voluntary COLA Buyout Program for an additional 2 years - building on a solution that’s already reduced our pension liabilities by an estimated $2.6 billion.

And we’re putting real resources behind it: $1 billion in continued funding over the next two years to keep this successful program going.

This means less pressure on our state budget today, while continuing to make meaningful progress on reducing long-term pension debt.

It’s a responsible, fiscally sound approach that’s earned bipartisan support - and recognition from credit rating agencies - as we work toward a more stable financial future for Illinois.

Taxpayer dollars should never be used to reward attacks on our democracy. Yet today, we’re seeing a dangerous precedent unfold.

Donald Trump created a $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” which would allow individuals who claim they were “wronged” by the federal government - including those tied to efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the January 6th Capitol attack - to receive massive payouts, with no Congressional oversight.

At a time when trust in our institutions is already under strain, using public funds in this way only deepens the divide and undermines accountability.

That’s why I’ve introduced the Anti-Weaponization Fund Tax Act. If any Illinois resident receives money from this fund, it will be taxed at 100% - ensuring those dollars are returned to the public, and not used to reward political loyalty.

Protecting our democracy means standing up to grifts and scams created by this President at all costs.

No one should have to fear gun violence when casting their vote. Yet as political rhetoric grows more extreme and polarization deepens, threats against election officials are on the rise.

According to a Gallup poll, most Americans believe that political rhetoric and criticism of political opponents have gone too far. And as we approach a consequential election this November, ensuring that every voter feels safe and free from harm isn’t optional - it’s required for the sanctity of our democracy.

It’s time for Illinois to join more than two dozen other states and ban fi****ms in polling places.

Dedicating over 40 years of his life to public service, Senator Dick Durbin joined us in Springfield today to reflect on his career in DC. From banning smoking on flights to spearheading the appointment of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and his work in establishing the DACA program to protect our immigrant communities, we thank you, Senator Durbin, for your dedication to making our country better for generations to come.

Your legacy will live on.

With less than a week to finalize Illinois’ state budget, one of my top priorities in Springfield is continuing funding for our Nonprofit Security Grant Program.

At a time when hate crimes and targeted violence are on the rise, no one should feel unsafe because of who they are or how they worship. This program delivers critical support for security upgrades - like cameras, access controls, and emergency alert systems - to nonprofits and faith-based organizations facing real threats.

Public safety must include protecting people from hate-driven violence. That means standing up for this program and ensuring it remains a priority in our state budget.

I’ll keep fighting to make sure every Illinoisan can gather, worship, and live without fear.

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and may we live in a way that reflects the freedom they fought to protect.

In observance of the holiday, our district office is closed today and will reopen tomorrow at 9:00 AM.

Ensuring fi****ms are kept out of the hands of those who pose a clear and present danger is essential to public safety.

My bill, HB 4999, passed out of the House Gun Violence Prevention Committee to strengthen and clarify how mental health reporting works within the FOID process. Developed in partnership with the Illinois Department of Human Services, this legislation closes critical gaps in state law by aligning mental health confidentiality protections with firearm safety requirements.

HB 4999 ensures individuals have a fair and meaningful opportunity to appeal a determination, while maintaining strong protections for the identities of those who report serious safety concerns. It ensures individuals can fairly appeal a determination while still protecting the identity of those who report serious concerns, and provides DHS staff with the same legal protections as other agencies doing this work.

This is a balanced, commonsense step forward - protecting due process, safeguarding confidentiality, and strengthening our ability to prevent gun violence.

Onwards to the House floor!
