Over the summer, due to the lengthy construction along Corning Road and the Ample Center Bridge over the railroad tracks, both HFD and Elmira Heights Fire Department took a proactive approach to the increased traffic congestion and potential access delays.

Both departments entered into an automatic dispatch procedure through Chemung Co E911 for incidents occurring within the construction area, ensuring the closest available resources could be moving immediately when seconds matter.

This evening, both departments were dispatched for a vehicle fire on Philo Road West, just off Corning Road. Upon arrival, a working fire was declared, and HFD and EHFD crews immediately went to work together, quickly extinguishing the fire.

It doesn’t matter what it says on the side of the truck — when the alarm sounds, we’re all there for the same reason. Get the job done.

We’re proud to work alongside some of the best mutual-aid companies around. Tonight was another great example of departments working together, overcoming access challenges, and getting the incident mitigated quickly. 🚒

HFD 1031 and crews operated for several hours this morning in the Town of Big Flats alongside several regional agencies at a commercial building fire. Operating on the “C” side of the building, this was a very challenging, labor-intensive incident that required crews to utilize a wide range of skills while stretching personnel and resources to accomplish the mission.

A big thank you to the Department of Department of Fire Rescue, Watkins Glen NY Engine 33 and Montour Falls Fire Department Engine 17 for stepping up and helping provide coverage to the area while crews were committed to the incident.

Regional cooperation and mutual aid are a critical part of the fire service. When the call gets big, we rely on each other—and today was a great example of that.

🚒 Tuesday Night Drill | September MVA Training

September’s Tuesday night drills are focused entirely on motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). It’s well known that HFD responds to a high volume of MVAs throughout the Village, so we dedicate an entire month to sharpening our skills and reinforcing the fundamentals needed on these incidents.

Tonight, 16- HFD members went back to the basics — vehicle stabilization, identifying hazards such as airbags and struts, and using only hand tools to create access or prepare a vehicle for extrication.

These may seem like simple tasks, but mastering the fundamentals goes a long way toward accomplishing our goals and objectives on an incident.

Thank you to Parmenter Automotive for the use of the lot this month as training repetition and knowing the basics are what build a strong foundation when it matters most. 💪🚒

A very busy few days in the Village! HFD members and paid staff have responded to more than 15 calls over the past two days, including several MVCs, medical emergencies, and alarms of service.

Crews tonight responded to a 3-car MVC on Interstate 86, with vehicles scattered across roughly a quarter-mile section. HFD Engines 1034 and 1032, Rescue 1081 and 1071, along with our partners from Erway Ambulance, Horseheads Police and NYSP assessed and provided care to Eight subjects involved. Six patients were transported with minor injuries to a local trauma center.

A big shout-out to Chemung County E911 and EAS Dispatch for their outstanding coordination and communication providing resources while managing the chaos over the past few days. It takes everyone working together to keep our community safe!

This evening, members of HFD, along with constituents from across the region, gathered to celebrate Chief Arthur Sullivan and an incredible 50 years of service to the Village of Horseheads.

A true leader, friend, mentor, and legend in the fire service. For five decades, Chief Sullivan has dedicated himself to the community, the department, and the people he proudly serves.

Congratulations, Chief Artie, on an incredible milestone! 50 years of service — a legacy that will continue for generations. 🚒🇺🇸

Thank you for everything you’ve given to the fire service and the Village of Horseheads!

Tuesday night drill continued with the second part of our Engine Company Operations training.

Crews reviewed various hose loads and stretches, differences in nozzle settings, pump operator considerations, and the use of foam appliances. Members also had the opportunity to reinforce these skills through hands-on practice.

As always, training doesn’t stop when the drill is over—crews wrapped up the evening by cleaning and organizing the back ramp.
