Tuesday night drill continued with the second part of our Engine Company Operations training.

Crews reviewed various hose loads and stretches, differences in nozzle settings, pump operator considerations, and the use of foam appliances. Members also had the opportunity to reinforce these skills through hands-on practice.

As always, training doesn’t stop when the drill is over—crews wrapped up the evening by cleaning and organizing the back ramp.

Tuesday Night Training – Engine Company Operations

This week’s Tuesday night drill kicked off our August training focus on engine company operations.

Members started with basic hallway pre-connect hose stretch drills, working together within their engine companies to reinforce communication, positioning, and hose management. Training then progressed to single-firefighter 2½-inch hoseline operations while our newer chauffeurs continued building familiarity with the pump operations on Engine 1034.

Every drill night is an opportunity to strengthen the fundamentals that make a difference on the fireground. We’ll continue building on these basic skills with more advanced engine company operations during next week’s training

July 31, 1976 marked the beginning of an incredible journey as Chief Arthur Sullivan joined the Village of Horseheads Fire Department.

Today, we proudly celebrate 50 years of dedicated service to our department and community.

Over the past five decades, Chief Sullivan has helped shape generations of firefighters through his knowledge, leadership, and unwavering commitment. Whether working on fire apparatus, responding to emergencies, providing EMS care, or simply being a trusted friend and mentor, “Artie” has truly seen and done it all.

His legacy is one of service, professionalism, and dedication that continues to inspire everyone around him.

Congratulations, Chief Arthur Sullivan, on this remarkable milestone and thank you for 50 years of selfless service to the Village of Horseheads. Here’s to an extraordinary career and the lasting impact you’ve made on our department and community!

HFD will celebrate next month with the department, family and friends during our monthly meeting.

Hose & Appliance Testing Day!

Today, HFD paid staff worked alongside our contracted partners from First Due Hose Testing of Syracuse, NY, during our annual hose and appliance testing.

This critical annual testing ensures that all fire hose, nozzles, valves, and other appliances are safe, reliable, and compliant with NFPA standards. Regular testing helps verify that the equipment our firefighters depend on will perform when it’s needed most.

Extra bonus to the fantastic hose folding they do every year!

7/21: HFD members conducted our monthly truck and equipment inspections, along with cleaning and organizing our apparatus and equipment. Tonight’s training highlighted Engine 1032 and Rescue 1081, giving members the opportunity to review equipment locations, ensure everything is in service, and build familiarity with the tools and equipment they may need on future emergency responses.

At the same time, several members who are currently enrolled in Remote EMT classes participated in the hands-on skills portion of their curriculum, continuing their commitment to expanding their knowledge and enhancing the level of care we provide to our community.

Training, preparation, and continuous education remain essential to keeping our members ready to serve whenever the call comes.

A Friday History Lesson!

Take a step back in time with these historic photos of Pioneer Hose Company and Prichard Hose Company, dating from the late 1890s through the early 1900s.
These images serve as a reminder of the proud tradition of service and dedication that laid the foundation for the Horseheads Fire Department we know today.

HFD takes great pride in preserving our rich history through an extensive collection of historical archives, antique fire apparatus, photographs, and newspaper clippings on display at the fire station. Preserving our past helps us honor those who came before us while inspiring the next generation of firefighters.

Have you had the opportunity to visit our historical displays located inside the fire station, at the Horseheads Historical Society and inside Village Hall. We love to share the history of the Horseheads Fire Department with you!
