Houston Independent School District 📍Largest school district in TX
🎓Preparing students for the future world 🌎 and workplace 💻 HISD won the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2013 and 2002.

The Houston Independent School District is the largest school district in Texas and the eighth-largest in the United States. Its 276 schools serve over 194,000 students, most of whom are classified as economically disadvantaged. Each year, this award recognizes the public school system that has demonstrated the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achi

evement gaps among poor and minority students. In December 2013, HISD received $30 million in federal Race to the Top funds for its innovative Linked Learning model that will blend rigorous academics and career preparedness from K-12 grades. HISD stands out as a district of choice. It offers a robust portfolio of schools from strong neighborhood schools to magnet, Vanguard, dual language, career and technical education and other specialized programs. HISD has the highest school district bond rating in Texas. In 2012, voters approved a $1.89 billion school construction bond to replace and repair 40 schools across the district, including 29 high schools.

HISD earned the Texas Way District of Distinction award for the 2025–2026 school year, becoming one of only 39 districts statewide to receive the honor. The award is provided by The Texas Way initiative—a partnership between THSCA, THSADA, and the UIL—to recognize exceptional sportsmanship and character development across all athletic programs.

According to Senior Executive Director of Athletics and UIL Activities Andre’ D. Walker:

"This recognition reflects the collective effort of our athletes, coaches, families, and community. Their commitment to integrity, respect, and excellence—on and off the field—is what made this achievement possible. This district earned this distinction because of the way we compete, the way we treat others, and the way we represent our community."

Walker was also named the Athletic Director of the Year, marking the first time an HISD athletic director has received this honor.
