Thank you to all the incredible volunteers who participated in this year's Houston Texans Care Volunteer Day! United Way volunteers visited our Donation Drive-Up to drop off supply kits for women at the Houston Area Women’s Center. These kits will help in HAWC's mission to keep survivors, women, children, and families safe from abuse. We love seeing our community come together to help one another!

Our friends at Phillips 66 kicked off this month with some #GoodEnergy as part of their new volunteer initiative! The Phillips 66 Midstream team helped combat food insecurity in our community through a food drive that supported over 100 families. They also generously donated books to local summer learning programs to keep kids academically engaged during their summer break. Thanks for giving back, Phillips 66!

United Way of Greater Houston and Greater Houston Community Foundation stood together to support those in our community impacted by COVID-19 and the resulting economic crisis. In March 2020, we established the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund to ensure the most vulnerable in our community affected by the pandemic have access to food, health care, shelter, and other necessities to sustain them in this crisis. To date, the Fund invested $18.4 million in 87 nonprofit partners serving more than 209,802 individuals in 100,578 households throughout Fort Bend, Harris, Montgomery, and Waller counties.

We are excited to announce our official partnership with the Greater Houston Community Foundation to coordinate recovery fundraising and response for future disasters. Both organizations share strengths and experience in establishing and administering disaster-related funds. Using a strategic, data-driven approach, we are well-positioned to identify needs and invest in a validated network of agency partners from throughout the four-county Greater Houston region.

“With every disaster, we see that those families and individuals who were already struggling to afford the basic necessities are disproportionately impacted when crisis strikes. A collaborative approach to fundraising and the investment of those funds allows us to not only address the existing need in difficult times, but also accelerate and strengthen response and recovery efforts for the community.” -Amanda McMillian, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Houston

Our Annual Meeting is a time when we reflect on the past year, all that has been accomplished, and the incredible people who have made it possible. Crises really characterized the past year, but we saw some truly inspiring, encouraging, and creative things come out of some of the toughest challenges. In partnership with the Greater Houston Community Foundation, we launched the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund and then, with GHCF and the City of Houston and Harris County, a winter storm relief fund to help our most vulnerable neighbors recover. Throughout the year, we saw our partners and programs adapt to provide key services and support to help lift up the community. None of this work would have been possible without the many people and organizations that give their time, talent, and treasure to United Way. We thank you all. To learn more about what we've been doing this past year, check out our Annual Report at: https://www.flipsnack.com/BRANDTEAM2021/2020-2021-united-way-of-greater-houston-annual-report/full-view.html

The Houston Harris County Winter Storm Relief Fund is investing an additional $2.5 million in area nonprofits to support homeowners with urgent basic home repairs due to busted pipes, associated water damage and prolonged power loss from February’s winter storm. To date, $17 million in donations has been pledged to the fund by generous companies and individuals and more than $13.1 million has been distributed through a network of Houston area nonprofits for relief efforts. More than 5,000 individuals have received financial assistance and over 300 homes have been repaired through grants from the storm fund. A final round of grants will be distributed in June.

We are thrilled to present this year's Robert W. Kneebone Volunteer of the Year award to Steve Stephens! Steve led the way as Campaign Chair through one of our most challenging campaigns yet. His leadership was essential not only in getting us through the challenges of this past year, but in finding creative ways to make the most of them. He inspired people to get involved and implored those who were able, to give to help lift up our neighbors and our community. He did it all with the kind of passion that pushes through even the toughest challenges. Steve is a true champion for United Way and our neighbors and our region are better and stronger because of him. Thank you, Steve!

Today marks the anniversary of George Floyd’s death. A life taken by a racially motivated act of violence. A life that ignited nationwide examination of the many issues around racial justice that continue to this day. We know through the work we do that racism, inequity and social injustice have created barriers to safety, opportunity and success for communities of color. We will continue to add our voice to those calling for a just and equitable future for members of the Black community and all communities disadvantaged by discrimination. We Stand United with our community to further advance the principles of inclusion, equality and justice by creating the opportunity for individuals and families in Greater Houston to thrive through the creation and funding of programs which address the economic, educational, and assistance disparities caused by generations of systemic institutional racism and other barriers, and to do so in an equitable, reflective manner.

During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our community. In the midst of a difficult year, we reflect on the tradition of leadership, resilience, and courage shown by AAPI communities and recommit to helping achieve a more equitable community for everyone. Our community would not be the same without the diverse contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders that have so greatly enriched us.

We're making mental health a priority by helping individuals and families holistically address mental health needs and any other basic needs that can serve as barriers to long-term stability. If you or someone you know needs help, call 211. Help us shed a light on the importance of mental health this Mental Health Awareness month.

Our Women’s Initiative members virtually celebrated the end of our community campaign, recognizing all of the incredible work they’ve done for the community this year! 680 members raised $4.6 million to invest in our community in addition to giving their time and talent to volunteering and constantly serving as ambassadors for United Way. As we pass the baton to some new Women’s Initiative leadership, we are excited to see what this inspiring group of women does this year. Thank you, Women’s Initiative members, for all you do for United Way and our community!

You donated books, read to and made study snack packs for students. You wrote notes of encouragement and thanks to frontline workers. You handed out food and water. Through all of the challenges of the past year, you showed up. This past year, more than 6,000 United Way volunteers gave 10,200+ hours to help our neighbors get through crises, like the pandemic and the winter storm, and to build stronger, more sustainable futures for themselves and their families. We are so grateful for all of the ways you gave to lift up our neighbors, our community, and our mission this year. Thank you, volunteers!
