We're extremely proud to have been able to host the Ithaca Law Enforcement Torch Run again this year. IPD's own Lieutenant Banfield will continue carrying the Flame of Hope representing New York State as the torch makes its way on the Final Leg to the USA Summer Special Olympics games in Minnesota. It's never to late to donate, you can do so at this link: https://events.nyso.org/site/SPageNavigator/Venmo_ST.html

The Ithaca Police Department extends our heartfelt support to the Syracuse Police Department and to the families of the officers injured this morning.

On Monday May 4th, The Ithaca Police Department and numerous agencies across the southern tier, gathered for the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Memorial Association's annual flag raising ceremony. The flag raising ceremony is to remember and honor the 40 Officers in the southern tier who were killed in the line of duty. It also marks the beginning of police week. This years ceremony was held at Stewart Park for the 30th anniversary of Investigator Michael Padula's line of duty death. IPD would like to thank the Tompkins County Sheriffs Office, Ithaca College Public Safety, Cornell Police Department, Tompkins County District Attorney's office, members of the City of Ithaca leadership as well as Congressman Josh Riley for attending/helping organize this event. We would also like to thank STLEMA for putting these events on so that those who have lost their lives are never forgotten.

On 4/16/2026 IPD, CUPD and St. Luke's church partnered to pass along information to the students of Cornell! It was a fun day where we interacted with approximately 150 students, ate some pizza and ice cream and also helped educate them on how to properly secure their belongings. We look forward to working with them again!

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This week, we will be conducting traffic enforcement focused on drivers using handheld cell phones and other electronic devices.

Scrolling, snapping, texting, posting, checking notifications, or talking on speakerphone while holding the phone in front of your chin for some reason can all wait until you are safely parked. If something cannot wait, pull over. Help keep our roads safe by keeping your phone down while driving.

On April 8th the Ithaca Police Department was visited by members of the Youth Bureau's RISE program. We gave them a tour of the building, a K9 demo and even let them work through a mock crime scene. The group had a lot of great questions for our officers! It was a great visit and we look forward to even more in the future!
