For teens, the social or rewarding part of a decision can sometimes feel more important than the potential consequences.

The National Institute of Mental Health notes that adolescent brain development and the importance of peer relationships can contribute to greater risk-taking.

That matters when we're talking about substance use.

A young person may hear:
"It's just one time."
"Everyone else is doing it."
"It can't really hurt me."

This is why prevention can't rely on simply saying "don't do it."

Young people need the facts behind the decision so they can understand the potential consequences and make informed choices.

That's the idea behind The Facts. Your Future.: Just Say No... and Here's Why.

Every person has a reason.

A reason they show up.
A reason they advocate.
A reason they believe in prevention.
A reason they keep going.

This September, we're kicking off our Power of Prevention 2027 campaign: This Is Your Why.

Over the coming months, we'll be sharing the stories, experiences, and motivations behind the people who make prevention possible.

Because prevention starts with purpose.

What's your why?

Stay tuned.

Why can a teenager seem incredibly mature one minute and make a questionable decision the next?

Part of the answer is development.

The teen brain is still developing, including areas involved in planning, decision-making, and impulse control. At the same time, social experiences and rewards can have a strong influence during adolescence.

That's one reason adolescence is such an important time for substance use prevention.

Young people need more than a warning. They need accurate information, trusted adults, and opportunities to practice making informed decisions.

Understanding the brain is part of understanding prevention.

🧠 The Facts Matter

Did you know the brain continues developing until about age 25?

During adolescence, the brain is still developing the areas responsible for decision-making, planning, and impulse control. Because the brain is still growing, it's especially important for young people to have accurate information and trusted adults they can turn to for guidance.

đź’¬ Try This:
Ask your child, "Have you ever heard something about va**ng, alcohol, or drugs that you're not sure is true?"

Start by listening. Then explore the facts together.
