America loses thousands of acres of agricultural to development each day. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service is committed to preserving this land for future generations and one of the best ways to do so is by enrolling your land in a permeant Agricultural Land Easement. ALE applications are open nationwide now through May 29. Enroll your land to ensure agricultural land stays agricultural land. https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs-initiatives/agricultural-conservation-easement-program/news/nrcs-announces-second

Thanks to the volunteers who came out with us to “plog” the Rhode Races and Events Providence Rhode Races yesterday! We covered most of the course and left it cleaner than we found it-and even met some friends along the way! Rhode Races has supported NRICD this year by allowing registrants to leave an optional donation to our work, and we are thankful for their partnership.

Want more plogging? Our friends at Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District run plogging events all year long, so give them a follow!

We are still looking for volunteers for our plogging event coming up on Sunday, May 3. The weather is looking clear and cool and it will be a great day to help support sustainability in the Providence running community.

"Ploggers" can walk or run 1-4 miles while ensuring the course is clear of race debris like water bottles, gel packets, etc. We had a lot of fun last year and collected 5 bags of trash, and this year we're hoping to do even more! We'd be happy to work with school groups to ensure a great volunteer experience.

You can sign up at rhoderaces.com/volunteer, Click on Providence and then Plogging. The task password is NRICD. Please help spread the word! Though we are assigning some routes today we will continue to take registrations.

Happy Arbor Day! Today we celebrate one of conservation's favorite topics: trees! Did you know the first unofficial arbor day was hosted in 1594? That's right! In the Spanish village of Mondoñedo, the town planted new trees as a celebration and recognition of their importance. In fact, that land still grows trees today!

While the first American Arbor Day was 1874, the tradition of celebrating trees in the springtime is long standing. Be sure to thank a tree today for not only the beauty they bring, but for the very air we breathe!

We love you, trees!
Sincerely, NRICD 💚
