From expanding access to education across Hawaiʻi to strengthening ties between Windward Community College and the Koʻolaupoko community, Chancellor Ardis Eschenberg has led with service, access, and aloha. She embodies the ʻōlelo noʻeau, “He pūnāwai kahe wale ke aloha” — aloha is an endless stream, freely given — through her unwavering dedication to students, community, and higher education in Hawaiʻi.

On May 14, the Honolulu City Council honored Chancellor Ardis at Honolulu Hale for her leadership, advocacy, and dedication to students and the people of Hawaiʻi. Earlier this year, she was also named the Kāneʻohe Neighborhood Board’s 2025 Person of the Year, recognizing her lasting impact across the Koʻolau region.

Mahalo nui to Councilwoman Esther Kiaʻāina and the Honolulu City Council for recognizing Chancellor Ardis and celebrating her contributions to the Windward community and the people of Hawaiʻi.

“They say an associate’s degree is supposed to take two years. Mine took a little bit longer.” 🎓

WCC graduate Sean Remos brought humor, honesty, and heart to the commencement stage as he shared his journey as a nontraditional student — one that included raising a family, working multiple careers, returning to school later in life, and finding purpose through education.

His speech was a reminder that there’s no single timeline for success, and that community college is often where people come back to rediscover their path.

“Sometimes the scenic route teaches you things the shortcut never could.”

To all of our adult learners, returning students, working parents, and students balancing life while pursuing their education: this moment belongs to you too.

Ask almost any student at WCC who Ryan Koo is, and there’s usually an immediate smile or story that follows. Congratulations to Professor Ryan Koo, recipient of the 2026 Board of Regents Excellence in Teaching Award.

Known for bringing history to life through meaningful discussion, critical thinking, and genuine connection with students, Professor Koo’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. In addition to his work as a history professor, he serves as coordinator of Hawaiʻi History Day and adviser for WCC’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society, helping create opportunities for students both inside and outside the classroom.

Mahalo, Professor Koo, for embodying the spirit of teaching, mentorship, and service that strengthens our Koʻolau community.

“We didn’t drop out. We graduating.” 🎓😂

ASUH President Blaine Kong had the crowd laughing, cheering, and probably crying a little too during his commencement speech last Friday.

From shouting out professors to talking story about his journey from James B. Castle High School student to student body president, Blaine reminded everyone that growth can happen in places you least expect.

Windward CC really changed lives this year. Congrats Class of 2026 🌧️⚡️🎓
