Freedom House Kent Freedom House provides transitional housing and support services to veterans facing a housing crisis.

Freedom House is a 14-bed transitional housing facility for veterans. We strive to improve the quality of life for our veterans, and we do this by providing support through intensive case management and access to community resources dedicated to enhancing self-sufficiency. Housing specialists are available 24/7 to answer the support line and provide a supportive environment to the homeless veterans staying at the shelter.

Cassie Guthrie, Program Manager and her team shares their gratitude for the community's support and dedication coming out to beautify Freedom House Kent and Miller Community House.

"This past Saturday, May 16th, Freedom House and Miller Community House came together for an amazing Community Clean Up Day! We want to give a huge thank you to the Lions Club for all of their hard work, especially the power washing and helping make our shelters shine. Thank you to our entire maintenance team for the heavy lifting, hauling mulch, and tackling the big projects that helped make such a difference. We were thankful to have our Executive Director and CEO of Axess Family Services Mark Frisone join us for our community clean Up Day! Your support , leadership, and willingness to work alongside staff, residents and volunteers truly means so much to our shelter and community.

We are also incredibly grateful to the volunteers, residents, and staff who gave up part of their Saturday to come together and help clean, organize, and beautify our shelters. Your teamwork, kindness, and dedication truly show what the community is all about.

It means so much to see people come together to support Freedom House and Miller Community House. Because of all of you, our shelters feel more welcoming, cared for, and full of pride. We appreciate every single person who helped make the day such a success! ❤️--- Cassie Guthrie

🌟 COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP DAY! 🌟

We’re rolling up our sleeves to give the neighborhood a fresh start, and we need YOU to help make it happen! Whether you have an hour or the whole morning, every hand makes a difference.

DATE: Saturday, May 16th
TIME: 8:30 AM – Until Finished
MEETING LOCATION: 1211/1213 Anita Drive, Kent, OH
(Miller Community House & Freedom House)

🧹 **WHAT WE’RE DOING**

We have two main goals to get the property looking its best:

1. Dumpster Run: Helping move items and debris to the designated dumpsters located on each side of the building.
2. General Clean-Up: Garbage collection and tidying of the exterior property—stretching from **Anita Dr** to the back of the house lines.

🎒 WHAT TO BRING

* Comfortable work clothes & sturdy shoes
* Work gloves (if you have them!)
* A "can-do" attitude

United States Marine Corps veteran George Aucreman is a retired Marine who proudly served six years, including service during the Vietnam War. George is known for his positive attitude, willingness to help others, and dedication to those around him. A proud grandfather, he is always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

George resided at Freedom House from 11/19/2025 through 04/08/2026 and was successfully housed in the Kent area. He is now looking forward to the future and this next chapter in his journey.

💫SPOTLIGHT MOMENT💫

A huge thank you to Foresters Financial for their generous grant supporting hygiene bags for our community members in need. Because of this thoughtful donation, 150 men’s hygiene bags and 50 women’s hygiene bags were assembled to help support individuals experiencing homelessness.

Special thank you to Kathy Schmiz and the entire group for your kindness, generosity, and dedication to helping others. Donuts and coffee were provided while volunteers came together to assemble the bags, creating great conversation, new community connections, and a shared mission of supporting those in need.

We truly appreciate everyone who took the time to give back and make a difference in our community. Your support and compassion do not go unnoticed!

🌟VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT🌟

Mike Walkerow is a dedicated and dependable at Miller and Freedom House, contributing 40 hours each week in service to residents and staff!

He works the front desk, runs AA meetings, transports residents to appointments and outside recovery meetings, and assists with move-outs and other transitions. Mike is also a hands-on helper and handyman around the shelter, always willing to step in wherever support is needed.

An , Mike brings a strong sense of commitment, compassion, and reliability to his role in the recovery field. He regularly facilitates meetings both inside the shelter and in the community, helping clients stay connected to support systems. Known for his upbeat attitude, warm smile, and approachable personality, Mike makes a lasting positive impact on everyone he works with.
