If someone is struck by lightning, don't assume there's nothing that can be done. Lightning strike victims NEED immediate medical attention. The most important thing you can do is call 911 right away.

A few lightning facts:
⚡ Lightning victims do NOT carry an electrical charge and are safe to touch.
⚡ Cardiac arrest and breathing problems are common after a strike.
⚡ Quick action by bystanders and emergency responders can save a life.

Think of it this way: If lightning has already picked a fight with someone, that's not the time to say, "Let's see if they walk it off."

📞 Call 911 immediately.
🚑 Follow the instructions of emergency dispatchers until help arrives.

⚡ National Lightning Safety Awareness Week is June 21–27!

Lightning doesn't care if you're finishing the 18th hole, winning the fishing tournament, or "just watching the storm for a minute."

Remember: The ONLY safe places to shelter during a thunderstorm are:
🏠 A substantial building
🚗 A fully enclosed, hard-topped vehicle with the windows closed

Sorry, but these are NOT lightning shelters:
❌ Golf carts
❌ Under a tree
❌ Your buddy saying, "We'll be fine."

If you can hear thunder, you're close enough to be struck by lightning. Head inside immediately and stay there until 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder. Don't try to negotiate with Mother Nature—she has a shocking way of ending the conversation.

⛈️🐾 Thunderstorms Can Be Scary for Pets! While many of us understand what causes thunder and lightning, our pets may think the sky is falling.

If severe weather is in the forecast, take a few simple steps to help keep your furry family members safe and calm:
🏠 Bring pets indoors before storms arrive.
🦴 Create a safe, comfortable space where they can retreat.
🏷️ Make sure collars and ID tags are up to date.

During thunderstorms, keep pets away from windows and outside doors. Frightened animals may bolt when startled by loud thunder or lightning. A little preparation can help keep both pets and their people safe when storms roll through.

🧺☀️ Tomorrow is International Picnic Day! There's something special about enjoying a meal outdoors with family and friends. Picnics are a great way to relax, enjoy nature, get some fresh air, and spend quality time together.

Before you spread out that blanket, keep a few safety tips in mind:
🌡️ Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot to prevent foodborne illness.
💧 Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
🧴 Use sunscreen and insect repellent.
🗑️ Clean up trash to protect wildlife and keep parks beautiful.

🌡️☀️ Summer heat can be more than uncomfortable—it can be dangerous, especially for those who work outdoors. Construction crews, utility workers, landscapers, farmers, road crews, and others working outside face increased risk of heat-related illness.

Heat illness can sneak up fast. If you feel off, don’t try to “push through it”—that’s how small problems become emergencies. And remember: your work can wait a few minutes. Heat stroke cannot.

Look out for yourself and your coworkers. Staying cool and hydrated keeps everyone safe and on the job.

⚠️ After storms, vehicle crashes, or other emergencies, downed power lines can create a serious hazard. Always assume a downed power line is energized and dangerous.

Remember, electricity can travel through the ground, puddles, fences, trees, vehicles, and other objects near the line. A good rule of thumb: If you're close enough to wonder whether it's safe to approach a downed power line, you're probably too close.

The only people who should be near a downed power line are trained utility crews and emergency responders with the proper equipment.

Vacation is a time to relax, explore, and make memories—not to figure out what to do during an emergency.

When you check into your hotel, take a few minutes to:
🚨 Identify where fire alarms and emergency exits are located.
🔦 Keep a flashlight or your phone within reach at night.
📱 Sign up for local emergency alerts if you're traveling to an unfamiliar area.
🌪️ Know where to go if severe weather is expected.

Many travelers spend more time figuring out where the ice machine is than where the nearest emergency exit is. While ice is important, it probably won't help much during an evacuation. A few minutes of preparation can make a big difference if an emergency occurs.
