Looking for a fun way to keep your little one active while building confidence and coordination? Our Amazing Athletes and Amazing TOTS programs are coming up at the Orion Recreation Center!

These programs use structured active play, games, and age-appropriate activities to help little ones develop important motor skills while introducing them to the fundamentals of a variety of sports.

From running and jumping to throwing, catching, kicking, and balancing, kids will stay moving while learning valuable lessons about teamwork, patience, confidence, and healthy living.

The best part? They get to learn, play, and have fun in a positive, non-competitive environment!

Amazing Athletes & Amazing TOTS are perfect for introducing your little one to sports and helping them build skills they'll use both on and off the field.

This week on , we're featuring one of Michigan's tiniest—and fastest—visitors: the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird! These little aerial acrobats may be small, but they certainly know how to make an entrance.

A Few Fun Facts:
• The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird species that regularly breeds in Michigan.
• Their wings can beat around 50 times per second, allowing them to hover in place and even fly backward!
• Despite weighing only about as much as a penny, these tiny birds can travel thousands of miles during migration.
• Males get their name from the brilliant ruby-red throat, called a gorget. Females have a white throat and are generally less brightly colored.
• Hummingbirds don't just rely on nectar—they also eat tiny insects and spiders for protein.
• During migration, some Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds make an incredible journey across the Gulf of Mexico, covering roughly 500 miles without stopping!

So the next time you see a tiny blur of wings buzzing around a flower or feeder, take a closer look—you might just be watching one of Michigan's most impressive little travelers!

Calling all young scientists, nature lovers, and anyone fascinated by creepy crawlies! Join us for Pins & Beetles, where you'll get a hands-on look at the amazing world of insects and other arthropods.

Participants will learn about insect classification, discover fascinating facts about these tiny creatures, and learn how to properly pin and preserve insects for a collection. You'll even create your own mini bug box to take home!

It’s a unique opportunity to explore science, nature, and a little bit of the creepy-crawly world—all in one evening.

Ready, Set, TRI!

Our Hatchling Hustle & Fledgling Fleet kids' triathlons are coming up on Saturday, September 12, followed by the Dragon Trails Triathlon for adult athletes on Sunday, September 13!

The Hatchling Hustle is a mini triathlon designed for our youngest Dragons, featuring a short swim, bike, and run. The Fledgling Fleet gives our older youth athletes the chance to take on a little more distance and challenge as they build their triathlon skills.

These three events are going to be an incredible weekend of swimming, biking, running, and community fun—and we need volunteers to help make it all happen!

This week on , our trail camera caught a coyote out exploring during the daytime! While coyotes are often most active around dawn, dusk, and nighttime, seeing one during the day isn't unusual. So what might bring a coyote out while the sun is shining? 👀

A Few Coyote Facts:
• Coyotes are opportunistic and adaptable, so they'll adjust their schedules based on food availability, weather, and their surroundings.
• A coyote may be out during the day if it's searching for food, especially when prey is active.
• Moms and pups may be more active during daylight hours while raising young and looking for food.
• Coyotes can change their activity patterns in areas where there is a lot of human activity, becoming more nocturnal to avoid people.
• During cooler months, they may take advantage of the daylight and warmer temperatures to get moving.
• Seeing a coyote during the day doesn't automatically mean it's sick or dangerous. A healthy coyote may simply be going about its business!

Coyotes are incredibly adaptable animals, and their ability to adjust to their environment is one reason they've been so successful across Michigan.

As always, if you encounter a coyote in person, give it plenty of space and enjoy watching from a safe distance.
