Correctional Faciltiy Construction of the 150-bed facility began in January 1991, and the facility was dedicated in December of that same year.

The Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility (LCMHF) was built in response to an April 1989 federal court order which directed that the State develop and implement an acceptable long-term plan for the mentally ill, protective custody, and high-security residents. LCMHF is now a 598-bed, multi-custody programming facility. The facility consists of the Central Unit, which has the capacity to house 310 male maximum/medium custody residents, the West Unit, with a capacity of 288 male minimum custody residents, and the South Unit, with a capacity of 120 male medium custody residents. In accordance with KDOC and State of Kansas policies, information posted to this site may be removed for the following reasons:
(1) Comments not topically related to the site;
(2) Profane or inappropriate language;
(3) Sexual content or links to sexual content;
(4) Solicitations of commerce;
(5) Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity;
(6) Information that may compromise the safety or security of the public, public systems, the State of
Kansas, its agencies, officers, employees or public officials;
(7) Content that violates legal ownership interest of any party;
(8) Content that holds the State of Kansas, its agencies, officers, employees, or public officials in false
light; or
(9) Information that violates operational security or is protected by law. The above list shall not be deemed to be all-inclusive and the State of Kansas and KDOC reserve the right to add additional criterion. This facility’s public information officer, who monitors and administers this page, reserves the right to moderate comments and ban users from this page for violating the above rules.

Larned Correctional held the Employee of the Quarter recognition ceremony and congratulations to the employees who were recognized for their outstanding work by their peers! Our Contract staff was Josh Snodgrass. His nomination reads: “I would like to nominate Josh Snodgrass, BCC Welding Instructor, for recognition of his outstanding dedication and commitment to resident success. Josh consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to providing residents with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience necessary to succeed in the welding field. Through his instruction, guidance, and willingness to work with residents he helps prepare them not only for their education but also for successful careers in a skilled trade. His willingness to invest time and effort into helping residents improve demonstrates the important role he plays in preparing the next generation of skilled trades-people that will be working in our communities in the future.”

Larned Correctional held the Employee of the Quarter recognition ceremony and congratulations to the employees who were recognized for their outstanding work by their peers! The Non Uniformed Employee was Pauline Hampton. Her nomination reads: “Pauline exemplifies what we expect of a LSCF employee. She is always punctual, pretty much early for work every day. She has built relationships with most everyone at the facility which assists her in daily duties of scheduling staff for training or helping someone with their online training. She ensures staff complete their training each month by notifying them by phone or sending an email. She is diligent in sending out the basic training schedule to ensure those adjunct instructors are available on the day they are assigned. She sends out reminders to newly hired staff to complete their basic training and sending out schedules of when those occur. She maintains the tracking of all staff for their annual training and keeps me informed of who still needs to complete what in order to complete their annual training. Pauline is an invaluable asset to the Staff Development department. Pauline is a self-starter and knows what needs to be done with little to no supervision. Even when things slow a little, she always finds something that can be improved upon and begins work on that. Pauline is someone I can trust to get things accomplished and not have to worry about the accuracy or completeness of any project. Pauline makes coming to work easy as the environment she creates is inviting and welcoming. She brings decades of experience into her position and has excelled as an Administrative Assistant in Staff Development.”

Our Uniformed Staff was COI Sean Ummel. His nomination reads: “Sean Ummel deserves recognition for his dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the facility. Having worked in the Admissions and Discharge (A&D) department for many years, Sean consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and a willingness to go above and beyond to ensure operations run smoothly. The A&D department is constantly busy, managing bus days, resident property, transports, and countless unexpected situations. Sean routinely works early mornings that extend into late evenings and often handles transports that result in overnight hospital stays. Despite these demanding responsibilities, he remains dependable, adaptable, and committed to the mission of the facility. Sean approaches each day with a calm and professional demeanor effectively navigating the ever-changing demands of his role. While he may not be a man of many words, his actions speak volumes. He has built strong rapport with the resident population and established positive working relationships with community medical partners, representing the facility with professionalism and integrity at all times. Sean’s reliability, dedication, and positive attitude make him highly deserving of Employee of the Quarter recognition.”

A big thank-you to the LSCF officers who volunteered their time to hand out medals at the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament in Great Bend this past Saturday! The athletes and their parents appreciated having our officers there to share in the excitement and make the day even more special. We know the officers certainly enjoyed getting to celebrate the athlete’s accomplishments. Great work CSI Bentley, COI Diving, CSI Ebeling, CSII East, CSI Ford, CSI Falck, CSI Hernandez – your support made this a memorable event for all those involved.

Congratulations are in order for COII Goldman, COI Stuhlasatz, COI Salmans, and COI Norman – they graduated from Special Operations Response Team (S.O.R.T.) basic training today. These officers will now participate in in the various functions provided by the LSCF S.O.R.T. members. We congratulate each of you on this outstanding accomplishment. Attending the graduation ceremony were CSII East, CSI Swinney and CSI Hopkins, and Major Graham.

LSCF hosted a quarterly Retiree Coffee Hour this morning. It’s always great to catch up with our extended facility family! Attendees were also provided updates on the facility.

LSCF supported Domestic Violence Awareness month by collecting personal care items for our Community Advocacy Agency – the Family Crisis Center. Kathy Graham presented the donations to their staff, including a check in the amount of $118 – which was raised by staff paying to wear blue jeans during the week. We appreciate the work they do and the services they provide to the area!

LSCF has a new Corrections Supervisor I (CSI) and accepting that advancement is Elaina Hernandez. Hernandez began her employment with LSCF as a Corrections Officer I in October 2023, promoting to a Corrections Officer II in July 2025. She is a member of the S.O.R.T. Logistics Team. Congratulations as you continue your career with the Kansas Dept of Corrections!

LSCF is proud to announce Gregory DiMarzo has promoted to a Corrections Supervisor I (CSI) position. DiMarzo began his employment at LSCF as a Corrections Officer I in November 2020. He also is a valued member of the Peer Support Team. Congratulations and good luck as you advance in your career with the Kansas Dept of Corrections!
