Larned State Correctional Facility

Larned State Correctional Facility Correctional Faciltiy Construction of the 150-bed facility began in January 1991, and the facility was dedicated in December of that same year.

The Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility (LCMHF) was built in response to an April 1989 federal court order which directed that the State develop and implement an acceptable long-term plan for the mentally ill, protective custody, and high-security residents. LCMHF is now a 598-bed, multi-custody programming facility. The facility consists of the Central Unit, which has the capacity to house

310 male maximum/medium custody residents, the West Unit, with a capacity of 288 male minimum custody residents, and the South Unit, with a capacity of 120 male medium custody residents. In accordance with KDOC and State of Kansas policies, information posted to this site may be removed for the following reasons:

(5) Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity;

LSCF staff, as part of the Dog Days of Summer, collected donations for the Pawnee County Humane Society and raised funds by paying to wear blue jeans. LSCF Wellness member, Kathy Graham, presented the donations and a check to Shelter Manager, Andrea Buhler-Lartz. We are proud to partner with the Humane Society in supporting the work they do for the animals in the area!

The last of our Best Chance Adoption Dogs at LSCF is Spot!

Meet Spot! An energetic and loving three-year old Husky mix. He loves water, running, and playing with other dogs – but he also enjoys quiet time with his toys and loves to cuddle up with his people. Spot already knows sit, stay, wait, and shake and is currently mastering roll over. He walks well on a leash, is kennel trained, and house broke. And he’s one of those rare dogs that enjoys bath time and being combed!
Spot is active, smart, and incredibly loving — he would be a great dog for any home!

As LSCF wraps up the Dog Days of Summer, we want to feature another great dog that is in the Best Chance Adoption Program at the facility.

Kylo is a happy, friendly, and affectionate 2-year-old male Boxer mix who is looking for his forever home. He is kennel trained, housebroken, walks well on a leash, and loves going on daily walks.
Kylo gets along wonderfully with other dogs and is gentle with people of all ages! He thrives on attention, hugs, and praise from his favorite people.
Kylo is also smart, eager to learn, and already knows an impressive list of commands, including heel, let's go, easy, stop, sit, down, wait, stay, come, leave it, load up, off, up, tug, drop it, stand, and find it. He also patiently sits and waits for permission before eating his meals.

Meet another great dog from the Best Chance Adoption Program!

Hi! I’m Cheyenne. I’m an 8-year-old labrador mix. Don’t let my age fool you. I still have a lot of energy and life left in me. I love to go for walks and explore outside. I also love to play in the water.
I have good manners. I know how to sit, stay, come, lay down, and shake. I’m also house broke. I’d be happiest if I were your one and only! Dogs tend to get on my nerves, and I am not a fan of cats! But that’s okay, because I have more than enough love to give my humans all by myself.
I absolutely love people, and I love to cuddle! My dream evening would be to snuggle on the couch and watch a movie. Oh, and have a few treats. I love treats!
So, if you would be willing to give an older dog a chance, please contact the Pawnee County Humane Society and tell them you would love to meet me! I can’t wait to find my forever family!

LSCF has gone to the dogs this week and as part of our Dog Days of Summer, we want to feature the dogs in the Best Chance Adoption Program. In conjunction with the Pawnee County Humane Society, the residents at our South Unit Minimum program work with the dogs to help them find their furr-ever homes.

Hi, I’m Goldie! I’m a 7-year-old Lab mix who is a fun-loving, energetic gal who loves to run, play and explore. I love to chase butterflies, birds and anything else that catches my eye in the grass. I also enjoy playing with other dogs and haven’t met one yet that I didn’t get along with.
I have very good manners. I already know how to sit, stay, lay down, shake, and I walk nicely on a leash.
I also love being around people of all ages and sizes and I love cuddles!
I do have a minor heartworm infection, so I’ll need to remain on Heartgard or a similar monthly heartworm preventative for the rest of my life. But I’m told this is a relatively inexpensive monthly medication and an important part of keeping me healthy.
If you want a good dog, I’m your girl! I would make a wonderful addition to your family!

Hello, my name is Cooper. I’m a handsome 7-year-old Australian Shepherd mix with a big personality and an even bigger heart. I may not be a pup anymore, but I still love to run after tennis balls, frisbees, or anything else you can throw for me to chase and catch. I also enjoy playing and laying in the mud and enjoying the outdoors if the weather is right.
I’m a bit of a grump when it comes to other dogs, and I don’t know how to act around cats, so I would do best in a home where there aren’t any others. But when it comes to humans, I’m a total sweetheart. My favorite place to be is snuggled up beside my person on the couch. And I love to get lots of love and attention.
I’ve been around long enough to have learned a thing or two, so I do know several commands and tricks.
I may be an older gentleman, but I still have plenty of love, personality, and fun left to share. If you’re looking for a loyal companion to have fun with and share your couch with, come meet me! I’m ready to find my forever home!

Hey everyone! I’m a one-year-old bull terrier mix named Bubba. I may not be very big, but my personality sure is! I’m a happy, energetic guy who is always ready to play! My favorite games are fetch and tug-of-war. I also love to play in the water.
I’m a pretty smart boy, if I must say so myself. I already know a lot of commands like sit, down, wait, stay, leave it, come, shake and a few more.
I get along with other dogs, as well as kids and adults. I love getting cuddles and love from humans just as much as I love to play with them.
I’d love a home with a family who will play with me, give me opportunities to explore, and love me for the silly pup that I am.

Recently, Larned Correctional held the Employee of the Quarter recognition ceremony and congratulations to the employees who were recognized for their outstanding work by their peers! Congratulations!

Contract Employee – Annette Carrazco – Aramark Food Service Director
Nomination reads: “For several years, Mrs. Annette Carrazco has served as the Director of Food Service Operations for both the Ellsworth and Larned State Correctional Facilities. In this role, she manages a wide range of responsibilities that demand accuracy, attention to detail, and constant coordination—especially regarding staffing and daily operational needs. Throughout her tenure, Annette has consistently placed the needs of LSCF at the forefront. Although we are a smaller facility, she always makes staff feel prioritized and supported in accomplishing the mission. One of her most impactful contributions has been her collaboration with the Classification Department to restructure porter schedules. Through her diligence, we now have a schedule that meets the operational requirements of the kitchen while also supporting the needs of the porters themselves. This improvement has had a meaningful effect on daily operations. Porters are now able to work while still attending programming or yard activities—an essential component of the rehabilitation process. Balancing these needs is critical in a correctional environment, and Annette has done so with exceptional care and professionalism.
In closing, Annette is a dedicated, pleasant, and hardworking employee who routinely goes above and beyond. She often travels between two facilities nearly 60 miles apart, and many days she is present at both. Her commitment is evident in everything she does. Thank you, Annette, for your outstanding service and unwavering dedication.”

Non Uniformed Employee - Juanita Karlowsky, Senior Administrative Assistant
Nomination reads: “Juanita (Nina), has been a wonderful mailroom administrative assistant. She has proven herself as a dedicated LSCF employee. After being a stay-at-home mother for a length of time after being employed as a detention officer, she decided to come back to work. She kept her past security work ethics all bottled up over those years and put them back to work like a champ! She adapted very well, works efficiently with little guidance needed by her supervisor and has never had a complaint! She follows policy and makes her job duties a priority. She pays attention to detail, completes tasks in a timely manner, and forwards important information to EAI. She is professional with her interactions with the resident population when they approach her with mail or GTL questions. Nina is a positive asset to the LSCF mailroom and really is appreciated for everything she does.”

Uniformed Employee – Michael Gensheer, Corrections Supervisor I
CSI Gensheer received two nominations which read: “…He was always polite, knowledgeable, and helped to answer all my questions without any frustration. I’ve never had a moment when he was judgmental, or condescending while giving an answer. At count times when Security gathers in rotunda he would give advice to everyone as a group. He is approachable, helpful and friendly not just to me, but all the staff on 2-10, and everyone who started after me. He is openly very proud of his job, and the work he does. He was a huge factor in my adjustment to the living units and becoming a competent Correctional Officer. I was happy for him to be promoted to CSI and believe he really deserved it. I still go to him with questions when I see him, and still wanted to nominate him, better late than never.”

““Since I first started, CSI Gensheer always stood out from other supervisors because of his drive to support, listen to, and teach his peers. Gensheer is always there to help even if it means correcting you, helping you out, or just needing a person to talk to. He's definitely everything I appreciate in a supervisor and more. For those reasons, I have a lot of respect for him, and I believe he is deserving of this nomination.”
