Yes, I really dressed up as Button Gwinnett today. 😄

And if you’ve ever wondered how Gwinnett County got its name… now you know!

As part of America’s 250th celebration, I had the chance to portray Button Gwinnett during a reenactment of the signing of the Declaration of Independence which was signed on August 2, 1776. Standing alongside Lyman Hall (portrayed by David Sikes), George Walton (portrayed by Ethan Pham), and John Hancock (portrayed by Mayor David Still) for the mock signing was such a fun way to bring history to life.

Button Gwinnett was one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence, and our county proudly bears his name. For a few moments today, I got to step into his shoes—and yes, sign on the dotted line.

History doesn’t have to stay in textbooks. Sometimes, you get to wear the costume, pick up the quill, and become part of the story.

The Count down begins! This Saturday, I invite you to join us in Downtown Lawrenceville for America 250: Celebrating Our Journey—a day-long celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Gwinnett County is uniquely connected to our nation’s founding through Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence. As we honor that legacy, we’ll also celebrate the many people, cultures, and stories that continue to shape our community today.

Bring the whole family and enjoy historical experiences, live performances, interactive exhibits, storytelling, hands-on activities, local artists, food, and an evening concert featuring the Lawrenceville Symphony Orchestra—all culminating with a spectacular drone show over Downtown Lawrenceville.

Sometimes it's a family living in a motel. A senior on a fixed income one emergency away from losing housing. A young person sleeping on a friend's couch. A parent working two jobs and still struggling to make ends meet.

These are the stories behind our Hidden Homeless series.

By elevating these experiences, we are putting faces to an issue that often goes unseen and reminding ourselves that homelessness can touch anyone.

That's also why we created Gwinnett's Homelessness Task Force—to bring together the right partners, improve coordination, and identify immediate, actionable solutions that help people find stability and support.

Every person deserves to be seen. Every story matters. And every resident deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate Juneteenth and honor the enduring spirit of freedom, resilience, and unity.

It was beautiful to see families, friends, and neighbors come together in fellowship, joy, and remembrance. Moments like these remind us that our diversity is our strength and that our shared future is brighter when we celebrate and learn from one another.

Today, we celebrate and honor the fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, mentors, coaches, and father figures who have helped shape lives through their love, guidance, sacrifice, and support. Thank you for the countless ways you show up for your families and communities.

At the same time, I recognize that Father’s Day can be difficult for many. For those grieving the loss of a father, longing to become a father, navigating a strained or absent relationship with their dad, or carrying complicated emotions today, know that you are seen and held in thought.

May this day be one of gratitude, reflection, healing, and love in all its forms. 💙

This past weekend, I was honored to join thousands of residents at Gwinnett Pride to celebrate this year's theme: "Unapologetically Us: Celebrating Our Authentic Selves."

I love that theme because, at the end of the day, every single person wants the same thing:

To be seen.
To be valued.
To belong.
To know they don't have to shrink themselves to fit into someone else's expectations.

One of the things I love most about Gwinnett is that our diversity isn't something we simply tolerate—it's one of our greatest strengths. When people feel safe enough to show up as their authentic selves, our community is better for it. We become more compassionate neighbors, stronger workplaces, more welcoming schools, and a richer, more vibrant place to call home.

That's why events like Gwinnett Pride matter.

Because somewhere in that crowd was a young person realizing they are not alone.

Somewhere was a parent learning how to better support their child.

Somewhere was an ally deciding to speak up.

And somewhere was someone experiencing what it feels like to simply belong.

As Chairwoman, I remain committed to leading unapologetically and helping build a Gwinnett where everyone feels welcome, valued, and empowered to contribute their unique talents to our community.

Because when everyone belongs, Gwinnett thrives. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
