Hurricane season is already underway and the most active part is still ahead.

The Atlantic hurricane season typically peaks from mid-August through October. Even when Gwinnett isn't in the direct path of a hurricane, severe weather can bring heavy rain and strong winds that knock down trees, damage power lines, and block roadways.

That's why staying weather aware matters.

If you come across a fallen tree or downed power line, keep your distance and never attempt to move debris near utility lines.

Did you know?

According to the Red Cross, brain damage can begin in as little as four to six minutes after the heart stops without CPR.

That's why what happens before first responders arrive matters.

If someone suddenly collapses and isn't breathing normally, call 911 and start Hands-Only CPR. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest until help arrives.

You don't have to be a paramedic to help save a life. Sometimes, the first person who can make a difference is already there.

Once school is back in, mornings can be hectic. Parents are trying to get everyone out the door, buses are making stops, teens are heading to class, and traffic is heavier than usual.

That’s why Stop on Red Week is such an important reminder this time of year. When you’re running late, it can be tempting to speed through a yellow light or rush an intersection, but those few seconds are never worth the risk.

As school traffic picks back up across Gwinnett, slow down, stop completely at red lights, and stay alert for children, crossing guards, and other drivers sharing the road.
