September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month

The global triennial theme for 2024-2026 is "Changing the Narrative on Su***de", which focuses on breaking down stigma, encouraging open conversations, and moving from a culture of silence to one of support.

Warning Signs to Know:

*Talking about wanting to die, feeling like a burden, or having no reason to live.

*Withdrawing from friends, family activities, and social groups.

*Severe Mood Swings, sudden shifts in sleep patterns, or increased usage of alcohol and drugs.

*Expressing unbearable pain or feeling trapped with no way out.

How to Take Action:

*Start a Conversation: Asking someone directly, "Are you thinking about su***de?" does not increase the risk, instead, it opens the door for them to seek help.

*Share Resources: Save 988 in your phone and share it on social media platforms using the hashtag to ensure your network knows where to turn in a crisis.

*Listen Without Judgement: Provide a safe space by listening with empathy and validating their feelings rather than trying to fix the problem immediately.

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

This annual observance helps to shed light on a public health crisis affecting roughly 1 in 5 children and adolescents. It brings together federal agencies, schools, and medical organizations to share educational resources and promote lifelong healthy habits.

Childhood obesity is a complex, multifactorial challenge influenced by genetics, environment, and socioeconomic factors. Awareness efforts focus on countering severe long-term impacts such as:

Physical Health Risks-Children with obesity face an increased risk of chronic diseases once seen only in adults, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and sleep apnea.

Mental & Social Well-Being-The condition is heavily linked to social isolation, lower self-esteem, depression, and severe bullying from peers.

Adult Transition-Kids with obesity are statistically much more likely to remain obese into adulthood, compounding lifetime medical risks.

Public Health Departments leverage this month to promote actionable, family-friendly frameworks. The most widely adopted is the 5-2-1-0 or 5-1-1-0 rule:

*5 Servings-Eat at least five portions of fruits and vegetables daily

*2 Hours or Less-Limit recreational screen time (TV, tablets, video games) to prevent sedentary behavior

*1 Hour or More-Ensure children participate in 60+ minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily

*0 Sugary Drinks-Eliminate soda, sports drinks, and sweetened juices in favor of plain water

Today is Women's Equality Day

Today commemorates the 1920 official certification of the 19th Amendment, which prohibited the federal and state governments from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of s*x. First celebrated in 1971 and officially designated by Congress in 1973, today highlights both the culmination of the decades-long women's suffrage movement and the ongoing global efforts to achieve true, intersectional gender equality.
