At approximately 7:00 a.m. today, LBFD Marine Safety crews responded to assist the Carnival Firenze with a critically ill passenger near the Long Beach Sea Buoy.

Long Beach Lifeguards and Long Beach Firefighters coordinated the transfer of the patient from the cruise ship and transported the patient to shore, where awaiting Long Beach Fire Department paramedics provided care and transported the patient to a local area hospital.

At approximately 4:49 p.m., Long Beach Firefighters responded to a single-vehicle rollover collision near Orange Avenue and Bixby Road.

A male driver struck a parked vehicle, causing his vehicle to roll over. Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools, commonly known as the “Jaws of Life,” to safely extricate the driver from the vehicle.

The patient was transported by LBFD paramedics in moderate condition to a local trauma center. No other injuries were reported.

On August 16 at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Long Beach Fire Department received 911 calls reporting two missing jet skiers. LBFD immediately began coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard and Long Beach Police Department to search for the missing individuals.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., a Good Samaritan aboard a vessel called 911 after hearing a woman yelling for help from the Long Beach Breakwater. LBFD lifeguards responded, swam to the breakwater, rescued the woman, and brought her aboard an LBFD fire boat for assessment.

The woman was transported by fire boat to shore, where LBFD paramedics evaluated her and transported her in stable condition to a local hospital.

At approximately 1:45 a.m. on Monday, August 17, U.S. Coast Guard and LBFD fire boats located both jet skis; however, the second missing individual had not been located. Search efforts continued throughout the morning.

At approximately 10:48 a.m., a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter located the missing jet skier approximately 2.5 miles offshore from the Seal Beach Pier. A U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer was lowered from the helicopter and successfully rescued the individual.

The missing jet skier, a man in his 50s, was airlifted to shore and transferred to awaiting LBFD paramedics. He was assessed and reported to be in stable condition.

The successful rescue concluded the search for both missing jet skiers.

Today at approximately 7:30 a.m., Long Beach Firefighters responded to an apartment fire in the 1400 block of Cedar Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from one of the units.

Crews quickly initiated an aggressive fire attack, extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading to neighboring units.

During firefighting operations, crews located and rescued a cat from the affected unit. Firefighters were able to safely reunite the cat with its owner while still on scene. 🐾

One adult was transported by LBFD paramedics to a local hospital for smoke-related injuries. Three residents were displaced as a result of the fire, and the American Red Cross responded to assist those impacted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Today around 2:00 p.m., Long Beach Firefighters responded to multiple reports of a residential fire.

Upon arrival, crews found a multi-story residential building with a parking garage, where several vehicles were on fire. Firefighters worked quickly and aggressively to prevent the fire from extending into the residential units, successfully containing it to the vehicles. However, significant smoke traveled throughout the building.

While searching the building for fire extension and assisting residents, firefighters rescued two cats from a smoke-filled apartment. The cats were later safely reunited with their owner.

Approximately 35 firefighters responded to the incident. There were no reported injuries to residents or firefighters.

Thank you to the Long Beach Police Department for assisting with traffic control during the incident.

The Darren Rockett Future Firefighter Cadet Program participants were recently introduced to one of the many specialized skills Long Beach firefighters train for rope rescue and rappelling.

Rope rescue is an essential capability for the City of Long Beach due to our high-rise buildings and cliffside neighborhoods. Each cadet completed a ground school training evolution before having the opportunity to rappel from the Fire Academy drill tower.

These high school students continue to rise to every challenge we put before them, building their skills, confidence, and knowledge as they prepare to become the next generation of Long Beach Firefighters

Today around 3:30 p.m., Long Beach Firefighters and Long Beach Lifeguards responded after a sailboat carrying five passengers struck the jetty at the entrance to Alamitos Bay near Ballast Point.

All five occupants safely self-extricated onto the rocks. A man in his late 60s sustained injuries in the collision. Long Beach Lifeguards used personal watercraft (PWCs) and a rescue platform to safely transport him from the rocks to awaiting LBFD personnel.

The patient was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No firefighters or lifeguards were injured during the rescue.

At approximately 4:23 a.m., responded to a single-vehicle traffic collision on southbound Studebaker Road.

A couple in their 60s was traveling southbound when their vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in several feet of water. The female passenger was able to self-extricate and wade to shore, where she flagged down help.

First responders located the male driver, who had been ejected from the vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries.

Both patients were transported to local area hospitals. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

At 9:14 a.m., responded to a structure fire at an unoccupied single-family home in the 400 block of 59th Street.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and active fire upon arrival. Crews quickly brought the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes.

No injuries were reported. Fire investigators are on scene to determine the cause of the fire. Southern California Edison, Long Beach Utilities, Long Beach Police Department, and the City’s Building Department are assisting at the scene.
