The City of Long Beach continues to prepare for and respond to severe weather and coastal impacts associated with Tropical Storm Rachel and the developing 2026–27 El Niño storm season.
📣 The City has proclaimed a local emergency to strengthen its ability to prepare for and respond to potential flooding, coastal erosion, infrastructure damage and other storm-related hazards. Below is an update on our ongoing efforts ⤵️
➡️ Bulkhead Damage and Repairs: Significant damage was observed along the bulkhead between 64th and 66th Places on Seaside Walk. The City deployed a crane to assist crews in the positioning of 30 heavy-duty, 3,000lb sandbags to reinforce the bulkhead at 64th Place while continuing its focus on conducting emergency repairs.
➡️ Sandbags and Sand Fortifications: The City has provided approximately 11,000 sandbags for this storm and approximately 18,000 across the three recent storms. Crews have been delivering sandbags to residents in the Peninsula on both bayside and beach side and select fire stations are serving as sandbag distribution centers for all City residents. The City of Long Beach Public Works Department used large-haul trucks and bulldozers to deliver sand for use in berm reinforcement and for residential use, with additional plans to bring between 50,000 and 100,000 cubic yards of sand to fortify the areas between 62nd and 70th Place next week.
👷🏽 Volunteers: We know residents and visitors are eager to lend support and help. City safety crews and emergency workers ask that members of the public are not to go near affected areas to allow them to focus on protecting lives and property. Volunteer groups and organizations should call the City’s Community Emergency Response Team (Long Beach CERT) at 562.570.4734 to coordinate with City staff for guidance.
