In Intro to Knitting, GenSpace members are turning new stitches and patterns into colorful handmade creations.

This month, members made knitted flowers that can decorate gifts or be worn as pins and brooches, along with handcrafted bookmarks in their own combinations of colors and designs.

Each small project offers a chance to practice new techniques, experiment with personal style, and create something special to keep or share with someone else.

Seated Strength & Stretch combines seated and standing exercises in a supportive class where members can move at their own pace.

Through resistance, balance, and stretching exercises, members work on movements that show up in everyday life—from standing up from a chair and carrying groceries to reaching, bending, and staying steady on their feet.

By bringing strength and flexibility together, the class offers a practical way to keep moving, challenge yourself, and feel more comfortable in your body.

In Learn English (ESL), Korean-speaking GenSpace members practice the language they encounter in everyday life.

Led by Moon Kyoung, who also teaches Learn Korean, the class explores grammar, common expressions, and the nuances that can make English conversations feel more natural. Rather than following a set curriculum, Moon Kyoung adapts lessons around members’ questions and real-world experiences.

Member Sally shared, “I really like the instructor and her dedication to our needs. She’s teaching things we need to be out in the world.”

It’s that connection to everyday life that keeps each class practical, relevant, and shaped by the members themselves.

In Intro to Digital Art, GenSpace members are learning to turn a blank iPad screen into their own original artwork.

Using Procreate, members start with the basics—experimenting with brushes, shapes, layers, and drawing tools—before putting those skills together to create more detailed pieces.

Whether they're new to digital art or trying their hand at drawing for the first time, each class offers a chance to experiment, create, and see where a few simple strokes can lead.

After retiring from a 28-year career as a fashion designer and art director, Hye Jin was ready to rediscover the creative passions she had set aside during her career. A friend introduced her to GenSpace, where she quickly found a home in Art History, Painting, Drawing, Creative Writing, and Script Writing.

“For almost 30 years, I was a working woman, so I never thought about myself,” she shared. “Now I can finally create, write, and share my own stories.”

That renewed confidence recently led Hye Jin to exhibit three original acrylic paintings in a public gallery—an accomplishment she credits in part to the encouragement she found at GenSpace.

Today, she also volunteers in Digital Art, shares her design and technology expertise with fellow members, and is often one of the first people to welcome someone new.

“Here, I finally realized I can share my talent,” she reflected.

iPad Basics welcomed new instructor Jordan, a USC undergraduate studying gerontology who first got to know GenSpace members through USC's GeroTech Club, where she provided one-on-one technology support.

After completing Senior Planet facilitator training, Jordan returned to GenSpace to lead her own iPad Basics class, guiding members through essential iPad skills in a patient, hands-on learning environment.

For many members, it was a chance to build confidence using their devices. For Jordan, it marked an exciting next step—from volunteer to instructor, continuing the relationships she first built with the GenSpace community.

OT interns Sara and Shannon led bilingual technology workshops in English and Korean to help members practice the digital tools they use most often at GenSpace.

Through hands-on activities, members learned how to scan QR codes, complete monthly class surveys, find program information, and access virtual offerings—all by practicing real tasks they encounter throughout the month.

By the end of the workshop, members left with new skills and greater confidence using the technology that helps them stay connected at GenSpace.

Learn French celebrated Bastille Day with a class that brought together language, culture, and tradition.

Dressed in festive attire, members enjoyed French pastries, learned traditional French songs, and practiced conversational vocabulary while exploring the significance of France's national holiday.

The special class offered a fun way to experience French beyond the textbook, turning a language lesson into a celebration of the people, traditions, and culture behind it.

Script Writing members continued collaborating on an original feature screenplay, developing characters, refining dialogue, and solving story challenges together as each class built on the last. Every session brings new ideas, thoughtful discussion, and a script shaped by the entire group.

For member Ruthe, who spent her career at CBS in television development reviewing scripts and providing creative feedback, the class has offered a refreshing change of perspective.

“It's a lot more fun working together and creating something than sitting in front of a computer doing it all by yourself,” she shared.

It's a creative process where every member helps shape the story, one scene at a time.

Before joining GenSpace, In Shil loved Korean dance. After years away from dancing, she wasn’t sure she’d ever step back onto the dance floor.

She began with seated fitness classes, gradually rebuilding her strength before finding her way back to dance. Today, Dance Aerobics with Jason is one of her favorite classes. “I would be lost without GenSpace,” she shared.

Now, In Shil and her husband are among GenSpace's most active members, often spending full days exploring classes together. Their enthusiasm has even led them to visit other Wallis Annenberg-supported spaces, including PetSpace and, most recently, the Annenberg Community Beach House with fellow members.

For In Shil, returning to dance wasn’t just about movement—it was about rediscovering a lifelong passion within a community that helped make it possible.
