June 6 marks D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II.

On this day in 1944, Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, in a major operation that helped turn the tide of the war in Europe. The first photo shows a mural in our Bradley Conference Room at Bob Hope Patriotic Hall, which highlights the D-Day landing zones: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.

The room is named after General of the Army Omar N. Bradley, one of the nation’s most distinguished military leaders. During World War II, Bradley commanded U.S. ground forces in the Normandy campaign and later led the 12th U.S. Army Group.

Today, VMFS honors the courage and sacrifice of the Allied service members who landed on the beaches of Normandy, as well as all World War II veterans whose service helped shape history.

Over Memorial Day weekend, our team attended Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s 28th Annual Tribute to Veterans & Military Families in Arcadia. The theme, “We the People,” was a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility we hold in honoring those who serve and protecting the freedoms they defend.

Caring for your mental health also means checking in with yourself and knowing when to reach out.

Take time to notice how you are feeling, talk to someone you trust, give yourself grace on hard days, and seek support when you need it.

You do not have to navigate everything on your own. Support, connection, and care can make a difference.

If you're a veteran or family member and need mental health-related resources, please call 800-854-7771, option 3. Visit dmh.lacounty.gov/veterans to learn more about the VMFS program.

Success Story: After being referred to our program by a family connection, Francisco was quickly connected with Community Health Worker Ailyn and began the housing navigation process the same day. Over the following months, Ailyn supported him through each step, from referral and assessment to coordination with housing partners. In April 2026, Francisco was successfully placed into permanent housing. His story reflects the importance of persistence, partnership, and steady support in helping clients achieve long-term stability.

Happy Birthday to the legendary Bea Arthur!

Many know her as a Golden Girl, but Bea Arthur’s story also includes service in the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II. A Marine, a trailblazer, and an American icon, she challenged expectations throughout her life, from serving her country to portraying strong, outspoken women who continue to inspire generations.

Today, we honor her service and celebrate her lasting impact.
