First 5 Madera County First 5 Madera County aims to provide meaningful experiences to young children during the first five years of life when brain development happens most rapidly.

Research shows that the most dramatic brain development occurs during the first five years of life. First 5 Madera County was formed through the passage of Proposition 10, a 1998 ballot initiative which placed a 50-cent-per-pack tax on cigarettes to fund education, health, child care and other programs for expectant parents and children ages 0 to 5. Since then, we've invested over $20 million locally to meet our community's needs.
