🚧 Andrews Park – Phase I Update!

We’re getting close! The new restroom facility is nearing completion, electrical service is connected and the lights are on. Water and wastewater utilities are currently being installed and are expected to be completed by the end of the week.

💦 Splash pad components arrive Thursday and Friday! Installation will begin immediately.

Next up: site cleanup and fine grading next week, followed by sod installation during the second week of September.

The photos show just how far we’ve come. Andrews Park Phase I is officially in the home stretch! 🌳🛝💦

ATTENTION!

Over the past several months, we have experienced ongoing treatment issues at the Indian Creek Wastewater Facility. After extensive investigation, these issues have been directly linked to someone illegally dumping motor oil and grease into the sanitary sewer system. We are actively working to identify the source of this contamination.
Any individual responsible for this activity is directed to cease immediately. Anyone with information that may assist in identifying the source of the contamination is asked to contact the City of Madison Public Works Department at (706) 342-1216.
You must understand that this is not only damaging critical public infrastructure — it is also a violation of both State and Federal law.
Dumping motor oil into a sanitary sewer system is strictly prohibited under the U.S. EPA Clean Water Act and Georgia environmental regulations. Hazardous waste such as used oil and grease can severely damage wastewater treatment systems, interfere with operations, contaminate waterways, and create costly repairs for the community. Violations may result in substantial fines, civil penalties, and possible criminal prosecution.
LEGAL FRAMEWORK
• Federal Law – Clean Water Act
It is illegal to discharge pollutants or hazardous substances, including motor oil, into waters of the United States or municipal sewer systems. Violators may face misdemeanor or felony charges, significant daily fines, and possible imprisonment.
• Georgia State Law – O.C.G.A. § 12-8-2
Georgia law prohibits dumping or introducing residential, commercial, or industrial waste into public stormwater or sanitary sewer systems without express written authorization.
• Local Ordinances
Municipal sewer ordinances classify used motor oil and similar contaminants as prohibited discharges and public nuisances.
PROPER DISPOSAL OPTIONS
Residents are encouraged to properly recycle used motor oil at approved collection locations, including:
• Local auto parts stores such as Advance Auto Parts and AutoZone
• Newton County Landfill

💧 Drought Response Update 💧

City of Madison Water Utility Administration recently participated in a Drought Response Webinar hosted by the Georgia EPD Office of Drought Management.

EPD confirmed that the entire State of Georgia remains under a Level 1 Drought Response. We ask all water utility customers to continue using water wisely and conserving whenever possible.

Every drop counts, and we appreciate everyone doing their part to protect our community’s water supply.

Heads up! Sewer work is being done on Pearl Street. Barricades are placed at Pearl & Whitehall and at the Pearl/Wheat St. curve. Please plan accordingly.

Just a quick community update on the exciting progress at Andrews Park!

Construction continues to move forward on the new splash pad. Grading, formwork, and underground plumbing have all been completed. Up next, crews will install the reinforcing steel and pour the concrete slab, bringing us one step closer to opening this exciting new amenity for our community.

Great things are happening in the City of Madison, and we look forward to sharing more progress as construction continues!
