We would like to address the Marion Memorial Garden and clarify a few misconceptions regarding its current condition.

The garden is entirely funded through donations, including all upkeep and maintenance expenses. Staff is aware that some of the newly planted large trees are leaning, and we are also aware of weeds and several damaged or dead plants throughout the garden.

A few weeks ago, staff walked the garden with our contractor to identify and prioritize all spring maintenance needs. While some plants will need to be replaced, the damage was not caused by a lack of watering. Unfortunately, we recently discovered that deer have been feeding heavily on several of the plants.

W**d removal and plant replacement are already scheduled, and the mulch beds will also be refreshed. However, staff made the decision to wait until the large surrounding trees finish dropping seeds and debris in order to be more cost-conscious and avoid unnecessary repeat work. Additionally, recent weather conditions have delayed some scheduled maintenance efforts.

We have a plan in place to complete all necessary maintenance within the next few weeks, ahead of a private event being held for the families of loved ones honored in the garden. During that event, families will also have the opportunity to plant annual flowers in memory of their loved ones.

We would also like to remind the community about the butterfly release, which is open to the public, and will take place in July. More details will be announced soon.

If you would like to support the Marion Memorial Garden and help ensure its continued care and growth, please consider attending the fundraising event on August 8 at Shovel City Drinkery hosted by Friends of Victim Assistance. We also encourage everyone to like and follow their page for updates and future events.

We appreciate everyone’s patience, understanding, and continued support as we work to maintain and improve this special place for our community.
