In 1902, 18 year old Bucky Lew made history in nearby Marlboro when he took the court with Lowell’s Pawtucketville Athletic Club of the New England Basketball League, becoming the first Black professional player in the country.

Maynard star Jack Punch was his first opponent. Over the years, they would face off numerous times, both in the New England League and then when they played for independent teams after it folded. While some objected to Lew playing, Punch was one of the majority of players who supported his right to do so.

Join author Chris Boucher as he shares pictures and stories about Lew’s career and old-time basketball in general. Copies of Chris' book will be available for purchase and signing

For those taking part in the 2026 Massachusetts Reading Challenge or those who just like to get book recommendations, here's the latest.

The June theme is "A Book with a Sympathetic Villain." Here are some suggested titles, though you're welcome to choose others. You can borrow your chosen book for free through the library or consider purchasing it via the Bookshop link provided at the Massachusetts Center for the Book website given below.

In the second image is a list of the most popular books among Reading Challenge readers for April, when the theme was "A Short Story or Essay Collection." Have you read any of these, and if so, what did you think?

What an exhilarating trip! The people are friendly and welcoming, their culture is lively. Motorbikes by the hundreds rule the roads. And the food is artistry on a plate, not to mention delicious. We explored on foot, by pedicab, plane and bus. Please join Linda for a photographic adventure!
