The latest Map the Meal Gap report estimates that nearly 2 million children in Texas experience food insecurity—a rate of 26.1%.

Here in North Texas, the need is just as urgent. More than 291,000 children in the North Texas Food Bank’s service area are food insecure, and child hunger increased in 11 of the 12 counties it serves.

Children should be focused on learning, growing and being kids, not wondering where their next meal will come from.

Together, we can help make sure local families have somewhere to turn when they need a little extra support.

What an incredible way to kick off Hunger Action Month! 💙

Last week, The Samaritan Inn Food Pantry was invited to The Star in Frisco for a very special announcement from H-E-B. In celebration of its partnership with the Dallas Cowboys, H-E-B surprised 10 local nonprofits with $50,000 each—and we are incredibly grateful to be one of them!

This generous gift will help us continue providing food and support to our North Texas neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

A special thank you to Mabrie Jackson and the entire H-E-B team for being longtime partners in The Samaritan Inn’s work serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness—and for continuing that commitment as we expand our fight against food insecurity. Your partnership means so much to our organization and the neighbors we serve.

According to Feeding America’s 2026 Map the Meal Gap report, more than 6 million people in Texas experienced food insecurity in 2024, giving Texas the largest number of people facing hunger in the nation for the third consecutive year.

Behind every statistic is a neighbor making difficult choices about how to stretch a household budget and put food on the table.

At The Samaritan Inn Food Pantry, we’re working to make nutritious food more accessible to our neighbors in need across our community.

Thank you to the team at Highlands Residential Mortgage for rolling up their sleeves and spending the day serving at The Samaritan Inn Food Pantry! 💙

During their volunteer shift, the team helped serve 110 households representing 430 individuals and assisted with the distribution of nearly 6,000 pounds of food!

The Highlands team jumped in wherever they were needed, welcoming and checking in clients, restocking shelves, helping customers shop, checking them out, and loading groceries into their cars.

It takes a lot of hands to keep our Food Pantry running and ensure our neighbors have access to the food they need. We’re so grateful to Highlands Residential Mortgage for giving their time and energy to make a difference in our community!

Dignity can be found in something as simple as having a choice.

At The Samaritan Inn Food Pantry, we’ve created a shopping experience that allows our neighbors to select the foods that work best for themselves and their families. Because receiving help shouldn’t mean giving up independence or choice.

Food assistance is about more than filling a pantry or putting a meal on the table. It’s about making sure every person who walks through our doors feels welcomed, respected, and empowered.

Food insecurity doesn’t always look the way you expect.

Collin County is known for its growth and prosperity, but that doesn’t mean every neighbor has reliable access to nutritious food. Portions of East McKinney continue to meet USDA measures associated with both low income and low food access, which is a reminder that hunger can exist even in thriving communities.

For many families, a full grocery store, a reliable car, or enough room in the monthly budget for nutritious food isn’t a given.

The Samaritan Inn Food Pantry is here to help bridge that gap, providing food and support to neighbors throughout our community.

Because food insecurity is closer than you think, and so is the opportunity to help. 💙

The need behind the numbers...

Households in an East McKinney study area were estimated to spend approximately 18% of their gross monthly income on groceries, compared with just 6% across McKinney overall.

That difference can put enormous pressure on a household budget, forcing families to make difficult choices between food and other essentials like housing, transportation, utilities, and healthcare.

The Samaritan Inn Food Pantry helps ease that burden by providing nutritious food and essential support to our neighbors when they need it most. 💙

📅 Save the date! North Texas Giving Day is coming!

North Texas Giving Day returns on Thursday, September 17, but you don’t have to wait to make an impact! Early giving opens August 27, giving us three weeks to build momentum toward our $250,000 goal. 💙

Every gift to The Samaritan Inn helps provide shelter, resources and supportive services to individuals and families working toward stability and independence. And this year, 100% of every online gift goes directly to participating nonprofits, thanks to Communities Foundation of Texas, generous sponsors and optional donor contributions that help cover transaction and technology fees.

Mark your calendar, spread the word and get ready to give! Together, we can make this North Texas Giving Day one to remember. 💚

Some families visit once. Others need help more often as they work toward stability.

Since school ended, The Samaritan Inn Food Pantry has welcomed 3,059 visits from households with children, ensuring families had access to groceries during the summer months.

Thanks to our partnership with Community Garden Kitchen, we also distributed more than 150 sack lunches to children who visited the pantry with their parents, providing an extra meal and one less worry for families.

Small acts of generosity create lasting impact. Thank you to everyone who helps make this possible.
