🚁 HONORING A HOSPITAL WING LEGEND, PHIL SCRUGGS
As Hospital Wing celebrates 40 years of serving the MidSouth, we would be remiss not to pause and honor one of the men who helped build the foundation of that legacy Phillip Rudolph Scruggs Sr.
Born October 20, 1938, in Sardis, Mississippi, Phil lived a life defined by service to his country, his community, his family, and ultimately to Hospital Wing.
Phil spent more than 26 years with the Memphis Police Department, serving in the department’s helicopter division and ultimately achieving the rank of Lieutenant. His commitment to service extended to the United States Army, including a tour in Vietnam, where he received numerous military decorations recognizing his service and bravery.
In 1978, Phil demonstrated that courage in one of the most defining moments of his career. During a hostage situation at Clark Tower in Memphis, he volunteered to assist in the rescue of two citizens being held hostage. During the encounter, Phil was struck by gunfire three times.
But Phil’s story of service didn't end there.
In 1986, the same year Hospital Wing began its journey in Memphis, Phil joined the Hospital Wing family as Chief Pilot. For the next 26 years, he played an instrumental role in building and shaping the program.
Phil wasn't simply a pilot. He was one of the people who helped establish the culture, professionalism, and aviation foundation upon which Hospital Wing was built. His experience in law enforcement aviation and the military brought a unique perspective to an emerging aeromedical program, and his leadership helped guide Hospital Wing through its formative years.
While serving Hospital Wing, Phil continued his military career with the Mississippi National Guard, ultimately attaining the rank of Brigadier General before retiring after more than 40 years of military service.
Behind all of those accomplishments was a husband, father, and family man. Phil and his beloved wife, Bonita, shared 65 years of marriage and raised two sons, Phillip Jr. and Lee.
For Hospital Wing, Phil Scruggs represents something bigger than a title or a list of accomplishments.
He represents legacy.
He was there when Hospital Wing was just beginning. He helped lay the groundwork for what would become a 40 year tradition of caring for the communities we serve.
As we celebrate where Hospital Wing has been and look toward where we're going, we remember the people who came before us and made that journey possible.
Thank you, Phil, for your service, your leadership, your courage, and your contribution to the Hospital Wing family.
Your fingerprints are part of this program's history, and your legacy continues to fly with us.
Fly high friend, you will be missed.
If anyone has pictures of Mr. Phil, please share them we would love to see them.
🚁 40 Years of Legacy.
One Team. One Goal. Saving Lives.
We remember. We honor. We carry it forward.
