During the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (FAPA) 2026 Florida Planning Conference, Christopher Rosenberg, AICP, Miami-Dade TPO Chief of Transportation Planning, led the mobile workshop “Guardians of the Everglades: Routes & Roads Oversight,” examining how transportation investments are shaping mobility, economic opportunity, and land use in South Miami-Dade.

Participants traveled aboard the MetroExpress Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to Homestead, experiencing firsthand how high-capacity transit is improving regional connectivity and supporting access to jobs, housing, and key destinations throughout the southern portion of the county. Discussions along the corridor highlighted the role of strategic transportation investments in accommodating growth while enhancing mobility options for residents and visitors.

The workshop also explored the broader planning context surrounding infrastructure development near environmentally sensitive areas. Presentations and field discussions examined the relationship between transportation systems, economic development, land-use decisions, and environmental stewardship, with particular attention to the challenges and opportunities present at the urban edge of the Everglades.

By bringing together transportation professionals, planners, and environmental stakeholders, the session fostered a thoughtful dialogue on how multimodal transportation investments can support community needs while considering long-term regional sustainability goals.

During the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (FAPA) 2026 Florida Planning Conference, Aileen Bouclé, AICP, Miami-Dade TPO Executive Director, presented on the "From Pitch to Public: Crowd Strategies Explained" panel. She discussed the TPO’s study “First/Last Mile (FLM) Connectivity during Major Special Events in Miami-Dade County” focusing on the feasibility of implementing multimodal on demand services to improve FLM connectivity during major special events.

Findings call for strengthening transportation access to these events through a coordinated, multimodal strategy. Key recommendations include: utilizing Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) facilities as FLM mobility hubs with dedicated, frequent transit connections to event venues; offering public transit fare purchasing as part of event ticketing process for events over 5,000 attendees; and assigning County staff to coordinate efforts among event organizers, transit agencies, municipalities, law enforcement, and emergency services. The study also proposes launching pilot projects to test and refine these approaches before wider implementation.

The Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (FAPA) is hosting the 2026 Florida Planning Conference at the InterContinental Miami. Under the theme “Miami Está de Moda: Planning the Magic, Remixing the Future,” the conference is bringing together planning professionals, community leaders, and industry experts to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore innovative approaches to shaping sustainable, resilient, and connected communities.

Miami-Dade TPO kicked off conference activities with a helmet fitting session for participants of the mobile workshop, “Art Deco to Adaptation: A Multimodal Journey Through a Resilient Miami Beach.” The event is helping prepare attendees for an immersive exploration of mobility, resilience, and placemaking in one of Florida’s most dynamic communities.

The TPO team also set up an outreach table, where staff will welcome planners, transportation professionals, elected officials, and community development practitioners from across the state. Be sure to stop by the TPO table to meet the team and learn more about the agency’s role in shaping the county’s transportation future.

The Miami Loop Summit 2026 brought together residents, community stakeholders, elected officials, and trail partners to discuss the future of Miami-Dade County’s connected trail network.

The Miami Loop is a planned network of more than 200 miles of trails and greenways designed to connect communities throughout Miami-Dade County. The summit highlighted progress on existing and developing trail projects, opportunities to close gaps between individual trails, and next steps toward creating a more connected network.

Through presentations, breakout discussions, and community input, participants explored opportunities to strengthen regional connectivity, expand walking and cycling options, and enhance access to safe, multimodal transportation throughout Miami-Dade County.

Miami-Dade TPO was represented by Kevin C. Walford, Transit & Regional Manager, Alexandra “Ally” Scroggin, Mobility Planner 1, and Jesus Fuentes, P.E., In-House Consultant.

RECAP! Last Wednesday's Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day at Palmetto Elementary School was an amazing celebration of slower, safer, traffic-calmed streets for children walking and riding to school.

In addition to the perimeter walk, the school celebrated with a special edition of the Palmetto Bike Bus, which - as usual - grew to a packed house of 50+ riders.

And yes, we had not one, but two rain showers during the walk event...and that only ramped up the fun. Plus, Pinecrest's excellent tree canopy helped prevent us from getting (entirely) soaked.

Thank you to everyone for the time, dedication, and effort put forth to make our streets a place where people of any age can walk, ride, and roll.
