Yesterday at 1230 hours a vehicle containing 4 adults in distress and a child pulled up on the ramp of central firehouse. As the adults exited the vehicle, Lieutenant Taggart and Firefighters Mitchell and Damiani met them on the ramp. The father stated his baby was not breathing and handed the child to Lt Taggart. The child’s head and extremities were limp and it’s breath rate was low with shallow, gargled breaths. The child’s father explained that it had been feverish the entire day. After observing signs of choking and fluid in the airway Lt Taggart performed a series of back blows to clear any possible airway obstruction while FF Damiani called for an ambulance from Mobile Life Support Services and FF Mitchell prepared emergency oxygen. FF Mills and FF Rojas, who were returning from an unrelated incident on Prospect St, immediately began to render aid. FF Mills assisted Lt Taggart while FF Rojas, who is bilingual, interviewed the family, who were Spanish speaking, to obtain more information on the child’s medical status. The child, after several rounds of back blows, spit up fluid and began to cry. Oxygen was administered and the child was monitored closely before being turned over to the care of Mobile Life Support Services who transported the child to Garnet Medical Center. We would also like to thank the City of Middletown Police Department who responded with haste to render aid to the Fire Department and the child.

Local 1027 extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our fallen Brother in Buffalo. Our thoughts are with our Brothers and Sisters of Buffalo Professional Firefighters Local 282 as they mourn this tragedy.

The BPFA, our entire membership, our families and our city are in mourning for one of our own. Yesterday our hearts were broken as we lost our brother during a 4 alarm fire on Main St in the downtown theater district. A father, a husband, a son, a brother and a friend. Our deepest condolences to his family and those that loved him and those that knew him. We, the proud firefighters of the city of Buffalo will honor our fallen. We will stand for him now and forever as we've done for so many others we've lost in this department's history. We will never forget. This is a brotherhood and a sisterhood. This is a family that bands together. Not just here in our city but across the nation and beyond. We greatly appreciate the outpouring love and support. Please continue to keep our fallen brother and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Today, Lt. Paul Butrim, FF Kelsey Sadler & FF Kenny Lacayo lost their lives in service to our city. FF John McMaster remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition. We will continue to pray for the family of those we lost.

Tonight, we mourn the loss of a hero officer — a son, husband, and friend. Only 22 years old, Police Officer Jason Rivera was murdered in the line of duty. We vow to Jason as his fellow Finest vow to honor his tremendous legacy of service & the ultimate sacrifice.
