In case you’ve got a couple feelings today, it’s okay.

Some days you can be grateful for what you have and still feel worn out.

You can love your family deeply and need a break from them.

You can miss someone and know the relationship was not good for you.

You can be healing and still have a hard day. You can feel anxious and still do the thing. You can be proud of how far you’ve come and wish life felt easier.

None of this makes you ungrateful, weak or confused. It makes you human.

Life is rarely one feeling or the other. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is stop forcing a choice and let both truths have a little room.

Foster care grief has no shape. His mom is alive, forty minutes away, and might call this week or might not.

Foster care grief has no shape. His mom is alive. She's forty minutes away. She might call this week or she might not. He might go home in March or he might not. Every holiday is a question mark.

That's not a smaller loss than death. In some ways it's crueler, because it never closes and no one throws you a casserole for it.

So when a kid in care is angry at Christmas, or checked out on Mother's Day, or fine for eight weeks and wrecked in the ninth — he's grieving something that hasn't finished happening.

Every kid in foster care has a track record of adults who said they'd be back. Testing you isn't defiance — it's data collection.

Somebody said they'd be back. Somebody said this placement was permanent. Somebody said things would be different this time. And then the car pulled up again.

So when a new adult says "I'm not going anywhere," the kid does the math on the evidence available and concludes, reasonably, that you're the next one. Testing you isn't defiance. It's a hypothesis he's running because he's been burned enough to need data.

The only way through it is boring: show up, do what you said, repeat, for longer than feels necessary. You're not arguing with him. You're outlasting his evidence.
