Tongue River Reservoir entering Stage 1 fire restriction; no campfires allowed

Big Horn County will enter Stage 1 fire restrictions at 12:01 am on Friday, July 31. Since FWP follows the county lead on fire restrictions, all FWP sites within Big Horn County will also be under fire restrictions. This means campfires and smoking in the open will not be allowed at Tongue River Reservoir and at Rosebud Battlefield State Park.

Please be watchful for fire danger while out recreating.

The Glendive Rifle Range, which closed Wednesday for survey work, has reopened earlier than expected. The range closure was due to cultural and heritage surveys being conducted for a proposed improvement project. The range is now available for use.

Meet habitat specialist Carly Rismon

Carly Rismon recently joined the FWP Region 7 Wildlife team as the new habitat specialist, and will be leading the Habitat Conservation Lease program in the region.

Rismon was born and raised in the Billings area, where she has deep connections to southcentral Montana's wonderful landscape. But her family is from Powder River County, where they run cattle.

"That land connection is really what pushed me to go into this career," Rismon said. "Seeing all the wildlife our land fosters is incredible!"

She pursued her passion by completing a degree in Fish and Wildlife Ecology from the University of Montana Western in 2025 and immediately began her work with FWP as a hunting access technician in Region 7 last fall. In that capacity, she had the opportunity to work and build relationships with landowners in the area. Coming from a ranch family, it has always been important to her to foster relationships between the ranching community and the conservation world.

When Rismon is not working, you can find her somewhere deep in the Beartooth Mountains, hiking with her best buddy – her dad – or simply at home with a good book. Her favorite book is Lonesome Dove, and 90 percent of her family's animals are named after its characters. Rismon loves osprey and has worked with ornithologist Marco Restani to band young osprey along the Yellowstone river!

Because of her passion for the great place we get to live and work, she is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to conserve these beautiful landscapes that she grew up in and is looking forward to working with everybody who shares the same passion as her.
