I wanted to think about Dolly before I posted anything yesterday. I wanted to understand why her passing felt so heavy to America.

I think it is because Dolly embodied what most of us want for ourselves and for our country. It wasn't her musical ability or her riches. It was her character. Dolly was generous without needing recognition. Private with those she loved. Successful without losing herself.

There was something deeply American about the way she lived. Work hard. Be yourself. Help your neighbor. Give when you can.

She was the best of us.
