On June 12th, National Harm Reduction Day, our team hit the ground for Milwaukee County’s 1,000 Doors Challenge and Resource Fair. Alongside 20 other incredible agencies, we took to the streets to bring life-saving tools and clear information directly to our neighbors' doorsteps.

Did you know that, in an effort to offer free, zero-barrier safety supplies, Milwaukee County has placed over two dozen 24/7 harm reduction vending machines across our neighborhoods?

Our goal was to actively connect with neighbors living within a 10-block radius of these machines, so everyone knows exactly where they are and what they can find.

Our team handed out practical safety supplies, including:
Narcan (Naloxone): To immediately reverse an opioid overdose.
Dual Fentanyl & Xylazine Test Strips: To test supplies and make informed, safer choices.
Deterra Bags: For safe, permanent medication deactivation at home.
Resource Maps: Flyers showing the exact locations of every 24/7 harm reduction vending machine in the area.

While connecting with the community, we found that most neighbors had no idea these vending machines were even in their neighborhood. That is exactly why this outreach matters!

As always, you can find free Narcan, fentanyl testing strips, and gunlocks at our FREE Harm Reduction Vending Machine at 1034 N. Vel R. Phillips, Milwaukee, WI 53203.

✨ Trainer Spotlight ✨

This week we're highlighting Mia!

Mia believes that difficult conversations during trainings are a good thing because they show people are thinking critically and engaging with the material. She works to create space for those conversations by encouraging open dialogue when appropriate, and providing opportunities for anonymous questions, and as a trainer being willing to say, "I'm not sure, but can I follow up so we can learn together?"

What Mia loves most about facilitating is the opportunity to teach and the trust that communities place in her, she sees that trust as a gift, one she hold on to tight, and hopes participants leave her trainings with a desire to listen, learn, and use their knowledge to help move Milwaukee forward.

Fun fact: Mia loves about 80% of the animals that exist... but kangaroos are definitely a no😂. There's just something about a marsupial being able to throw hands like a human that doesn't sit right with her. She says they're probably important to their ecosystem, but she's still keeping her distance!

Thank you, Mia, for your passion, authenticity, and commitment to helping others learn and grow. 💜

Join Mia and the Sound Mind team for a future training, for any questions email us at [email protected]

Uncertainty about the process is one of the biggest reasons people hesitate to seek support. Knowing exactly what to expect can take away that hesitation.

You are in control when you connect with a local resource navigator. The entire process is built around your privacy and choice:

You stay anonymous: You never have to share your name, your history, or any identifying details to get help.

Zero judgment/Zero pressure: Navigators are not here to evaluate your choices or force you down a specific path. They are here to listen and help you find options.

You set the goals: There are no mandatory checklists or requirements. Whether you need local counseling, a safe place to sleep, or a location to pick up free harm reduction supplies, you only share what you want to.

A direct pathway: Instead of trying to figure out the system on your own, you get clear, direct options tailored to your life today.

If you want to explore your options, IMPACT 211 Wisconsin provides real-time navigation for crisis support, housing assistance, and local service referrals. You can also connect with the Wisconsin Addiction Recovery Helpline for free at 211 or 877-947-2211 for 24/7 care coordination.

Check out Devin Blake's latest article on Milwaukee's growing surveillance infrastructure.

Milwaukee Turners Executive Director Emilio De Torre said there is no indication of the safety benefits of systemwide surveillance. “It's just rhetoric without any data to back it up,” De Torre said. “The public is only just learning how Flock and ALPRs are part of a much larger, more insidious web of nonstop surveillance,” De Torre said. “They can too readily determine where any of us are going at all times and what we’re doing.”
