Center for Urban Teaching Identification, preparation, and support of urban teachers, leaders and schools is what we do. This knowledge defines our purpose.

We believe fervently in the power of great teachers to forever transform the lives of young people in the urban classroom. The very best principals and school leaders in the movement to reform schools are constantly searching for excellent teachers. They understand the profound impact that even one great teacher can have on the lives of hundreds and even thousands of young people. As a result, we

move with even greater urgency armed with the knowledge that our work is important and that God has placed us here at this time to make a difference in the lives of these children.

We were honored to welcome our friends from Northwestern Mutual for a visit to the Center for Urban Teaching’s (CfUT) Summer School at St. Marcus School, one of CfUT’s 20 Summer School sites. The visit provided a firsthand look at how our organizations work together to strengthen education in Milwaukee and highlighted the impact of our longstanding partnership. We were delighted to welcome Jeannie Fenceroy, senior portfolio manager of education at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, to the Center for Urban Teaching’s (CfUT) Summer School. During her visit, she saw our Science of Reading instruction in action and the ways aspiring teachers are building the knowledge and skills to help every child become a confident reader. The Center for Urban Teaching (CfUT) is proud to induct Shaun Luehring, Ph.D., president and CEO of LUMIN Schools, as an honorary CfUT alumnus.

Sixteen years ago, Shaun answered the call to serve in Milwaukee from San Jose. Since then, Shaun has faithfully invested in students, educators and schools throughout Milwaukee and Racine. From transforming school culture and student outcomes to leading LUMIN Schools, Shaun has exemplified wisdom, humility and a steadfast commitment to serving others.

Shaun was the first school network leader in Milwaukee and Racine to commit every school in his organization to participating in CfUT’s Summer School program – all six LUMIN schools. In addition, Shaun has invested in our program and educator pipeline by serving as a CfUT Leader Coach and, for more than a decade, as an adjunct professor in CfUT’s master’s degree program partnership with Wisconsin Lutheran College.

Thank you, Shaun, for your partnership, your leadership and your unwavering dedication to helping every child experience an excellent education. We are grateful to recognize you as an honorary CfUT alumnus. Welcome to the CfUT family!

Thank you to everyone who made the Center for Urban Teaching’s (CfUT) 17th Summer School unforgettable!

More than 300 aspiring teachers and leaders gained hands-on experience while leading Summer School at 20 schools, serving more than 1,500 children through high-quality instruction, meaningful relationships and joyful learning.

Representing 113 colleges, 28 states and 18 countries, this year’s cohort shares a commitment to helping every child learn and thrive in classrooms built on high expectations, strong relationships and unconditional love.

A special shout-out to Forrest Frank for creating “Lemonade,” the song that became our Summer School anthem.

Get a first look at the Center for Urban Teaching’s (CfUT) 2026 Teacher Celebration. 🎉

More than 300 aspiring educators from 20 school sites gathered to celebrate a summer of growth, shared purpose and lifelong friendships forged through six weeks of learning, teaching and serving together.

For many, this was their first time leading a classroom. These candid moments reflect the joy of discovering they have what it takes to become the teachers every student needs and deserves – and of celebrating alongside the people who helped them get there.
