Tonight’s news regarding Chief Brian O’Hara is difficult and deeply disappointing.

Chief O’Hara served Minneapolis during one of the most challenging periods in our city’s history.

I appreciated his engagement with communities across the city - including in Ward 6 - and his commitment to public safety during a difficult moment for Minneapolis.

My support for Chief O’Hara’s reappointment was based on my own direct experiences working with him and seeing the progress our city was beginning to make around public safety and community trust.

The Mayor has stated that new information regarding the investigative process changed the situation and led to tonight’s outcome.

Out of respect for the process and everyone involved, I’m not going to speculate further tonight.

What matters now is maintaining public trust and ensuring a steady transition forward for the city.

I’m grateful to Assistant Chief Katie Blackwell for stepping into leadership during this transition - and I remain committed to supporting public safety that serves the entire community with professionalism, accountability, and compassion.

JUST IN: Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara resigned Tuesday after facing discipline from Mayor Jacob Frey over allegations he interfered with an investigation into sexual relations with city employees.

“Trust is not secondary to the job, it is the job,” Frey said. “When trust is broken it becomes extremely difficult to continue leading effectively.”

Frey announced at an evening news conference he had accepted O’Hara’s resignation after informing the chief he would face discipline up to and including firing.

Assistant Chief Katie Blackwell will take over as interim chief effective immediately.

📢🗳️Here’s why I voted no on the safety & wellness center.

I support better training and wellness resources for our public safety workers. They deserve strong tools, modern training, and real support to meet our consent decree obligations.

But this plan still has no long‑term funding, no state partnership, and no clear way to pay for a project this big.

Minneapolis is already facing real budget pressures, and I don’t believe our taxpayers should carry this alone.

We can keep improving training and wellness without committing the city to a project we cannot sustain right now. And that’s why I voted no.

📢👉🏾Too many families in Ward 6 and across Minneapolis live with the trauma and fear of gun violence.

The Task Force on non‑fatal shootings will improve investigations and clearance rates by coordinating cases, supporting victims and families, and partnering with violence interrupters, neighborhood groups, youth workers, faith leaders, and law enforcement.

This program will help prevent retaliation, restore accountability, and make our neighborhoods safer for families across Ward 6.

📢✊🏾Nonfatal shootings cannot be treated as secondary crimes.

If we want to prevent retaliation, reduce violence, and save lives, these cases need to be investigated quickly and seriously.

The new ‘FAST’ initiative is an important step toward improving clearance rates and making our communities safer.

I appreciate Mayor Jacob Frey, Council Members Robin Wonsley & Jason Chavez, Chief O’Hara, and everyone working to move this effort forward.

📢⚕️The Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) is a lifeline for so many families across Minneapolis and our state. Grateful to everyone who came together to protect this critical hospital, the workers who keep it running, and the care people rely on every day.—Jamal

This is one of the biggest, most impactful policy wins of the YEAR. All session long, DFLers were adamant that we needed to pass legislation to save HCMC — and we just did.
