MPD was budgeted for about $6 million in overtime last year but spent almost $33 million. That’s a major failure in leadership and financial oversight.. We can’t let this kind of overspending take money away from the programs our communities need. The administration must take responsibility and be honest about how Minneapolis residents’ tax dollars are being used.

📢🎤KSTP-TV took a closer look at the debate over autonomous vehicles in Minneapolis and our ‘Workers Drive Minneapolis’ proposal.

👉🏾This conversation is about how we prepare for new technology while considering public safety, accessibility, and the impact on thousands of rideshare drivers and their families.

As I told KSTP: “Technology should work with us, work for us, but not work against us.”

Yesterday I went to the airport to meet our ride‑share drivers. Many are immigrants and minority workers who depend on this job to support their families.

Waymo plans to bring self‑driving cars to Minneapolis, and the airport is one of the places they may start testing. If that happens, over 10,000 driver jobs could be at risk.

📢🤖 Technology is going to keep changing the way we live and work. That is not something government can stop, and I don’t think we should try.

But I also don’t believe every technological change is automatically progress.

✊🏾 We spent years fighting to make rideshare driving a fair and viable way for people to support their families. For many immigrant families in Minneapolis, this work has become a real source of economic opportunity.

Now autonomous vehicle companies are developing a model that can provide much of the same transportation service while removing the worker entirely.

👉🏾 I’m not going to apologize for asking what that means for the people who depend on this work.

Technology changes industries. We know change is coming. But government doesn’t have to be indifferent to what that change means for working people.

We should ask whether new technology makes our city stronger, whether it improves safety and mobility, whether it creates opportunity - and who bears the cost when an industry changes.

That’s why I joined Council Members Robin Wonsley, Aurin Chowdhury, and Jason Chavez in advancing “Workers Drive Minneapolis” and writing about our proposal in the Minnesota Star Tribune.

"We're not here against technology, technology is something we use every day. But we're here to be responsible lawmakers," Council Vice President Jamal Osman said. "Can you imagine a robotic car driving 24/7, not taking a rest, collecting all the money? And that money is not staying in our community, it's going back to Silicon Valley."

Will Waymo have to hire drivers? Minneapolis councilmembers proposed new regulations for robotaxis operating in the city.

📢🚕Self‑driving cars like Waymo are coming to Minneapolis. We can’t stop technology, but we can make sure it doesn’t hurt workers.

👉🏾Thousands of rideshare drivers, many of them immigrants and working parents depend on this work to support their families. Without rules, companies like Waymo could replace them overnight.

✊🏾That’s why we’re pushing the ‘Workers Drive Minneapolis’ ordinance. It’s simple: A human safety monitor must be in the front seat. Drivers must be protected. Our community must stay safe.

We welcome innovation, but it must follow our laws and respect our workers.
