Some of the Stable Homes Stable Schools (SHSS) team gathered last week for a staffing retreat! Celebrating recent stories of success, taking part in team building activities, and sharing a meal together, the team is refreshed and better aligned to support more families in the coming school year.

Stable Homes Stable Schools is a pioneering partnership between MPHA, City of Minneapolis Government, Hennepin County Government, and Minneapolis Public Schools, along with the YMCA of the North as the service partner, working to reduce homelessness among families with elementary-aged kids in Minneapolis and improve educational outcomes for students impacted by housing instability.

The program is a holistic approach to addressing homelessness through prevention (emergency short- and medium-term assistance) and intervention (multi-year rental assistance and support services). Since 2019, more than 7,500 kids and 2,700 families have benefited from the program.

In July, MPHA is launching a new Landlord Excellence Program to expand training resources, incentivize high-performing landlords, and more quickly remediate problems with landlords who partner with MPHA to provide homes for individuals and families with a rental subsidy through MPHA’s voucher programs. This new program will ensure landlords meet MPHA’s standards, provide voucher holders additional insight into landlords’ performance, and create greater efficiencies within the agency’s landlord inspection and education work. The program will become effective on July 1, 2026.

Late last month, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development completed its final 2026 inspection of MPHA’s public housing units under its new physical inspection system, National Standards for the Physical Inspection of Real Estate (NSPIRE).

For its first score under the new NSPIRE inspection system, MPHA earned a weighted average score of 87 out of 100 across its public housing portfolio.

“Our public housing operations team did a great job going from an inspection system staff spent decades mastering to a brand new system with different measurements and criteria,” said Abdi Warsame, Executive Director/CEO of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority. “With the inaugural inspections complete, I have challenged our team to build on this score in the years ahead to meet or exceed the near-perfect scores MPHA scored under HUD’s previous physical inspection system.”

🎉 Heritage Commons residents celebrated the building’s 20th year anniversary last month! The resident council threw a big celebration with a home-cooked meal, DJ, and photobooth. With some residents having lived in the building since its opening, residents and staff reflected on the memories they’ve shared over the years.

Built in 2006, Heritage Commons is made up of 102 one-bedroom units and offers home care programming. The four-story building is in the Sumner-Glenwood neighborhood, across the street from the Cora McCorvey Health and Wellness Center and overlooking Van White Memorial Park.

Last month, MPHA ED/CEO Abdi Warsame presented MPHA’s 2025 accomplishments and 2026 goals to the Minneapolis Highrise Representative Council. Strong relationships with residents have been key to MPHA’s many successes in recent years, including reinstating the city's housing levy in 2023!

Thank you, Rep. Ilhan Omar and Pearll Warren - Minneapolis Ward 5, for stopping by Lyndale Manor to hear directly from MPHA residents about the issues that matter most to them! Residents shared their stories and concerns about public safety, needing more federal funding to improve MPHA buildings, and access to mental health resources.

Congresswoman Omar has been a strong supporter of MPHA, helping secure $2 million in federal funding in 2022 to install fire suppression systems in MPHA high-rises. Earlier this year, the Representative advanced MPHA’s $1 million Community Project Funding application to support electrical and fire system replacements at a North Minneapolis high-rise.

Special thank you to Councilmember Warren, who in only a few months in her role has met with MPHA leadership and residents numerous times to express her support for the agency’s many activities. Agency leaders and staff look forward to continued partnership with the Councilmember.

Last week, The Minneapolis Foundation announced a $400,000 grant to Stable Homes Stable Schools (SHSS) through the foundation’s OneMPLS Fund! 🎉The award is part of a larger $500,000 grant to Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) supporting housing stability programming designed to support educational outcomes and end cycles of generational poverty for students and their families over the next two years.

With SHSS experiencing a significant increase in referrals in recent months, the funding comes at a critical time. The $400,000 granted funds will support the expansion of program eligibility to families earning below 50 percent Area Median Income (AMI), up from less than 30 percent AMI, ensuring that more children at risk of housing related educational disruptions are able to fully engage in their lessons and classrooms.

Stable Homes Stable Schools is a pioneering partnership between MPHA, City of Minneapolis Government, Hennepin County Government, and MPS, along with the YMCA of the North as the service partner, working to reduce homelessness among families with elementary-aged kids in Minneapolis and improve immediate and long term educational outcomes for students impacted by housing instability. The program is a holistic approach to addressing homelessness through prevention (emergency short- and medium-term assistance) and intervention (multi-year rental assistance and support services). Since 2019, more than 7,500 kids and 2,700 families have benefited from the program.

🎉 Last week, current and former MPHA staff gathered to celebrate CFO Tim Durose’s retirement! Following a 33-year career at MPHA, Tim is retiring on June 1.

Tim’s impact on the agency over his more than 30 years cannot be overstated. From helping negotiate and implement MPHA’s Moving to Work agreement with HUD, overseeing MPHA’s Yardi transition, to more recently helping negotiate MPHA’s first Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Project, Tim has helped lead the agency with excellence. As recognition of Tim’s accomplishments, he was honored with a Career Achievement award as a part of Minneapolis-St Paul Business Journal 2025 CFO of the Year awards last fall—one of the most prestigious awards for CFOs in Minnesota.

🌟 Thank you, Tim, for the decades of incredible service to the MPHA community, and congratulations on retirement!
