Earlier this week, MPHA’s Director of HCV Brandon Crow joined Alliance Housing Inc. to celebrate the groundbreaking of 2116 Nicollet! This new building in the Whittier neighborhood includes 54 affordable family housing units, with 11 being supported by MPHA project-based vouchers.

This housing development is an example of how MPHA directly supports deeply affordable housing in Minneapolis beyond its own ~6,000 units. Since 2019, MPHA project-based vouchers have accounted for more than half of all deeply affordable housing built in Minneapolis. And MPHA is committed to this important work, with the goal of helping produce at least 150 new deeply affordable homes in Minneapolis a year.

Beyond the 11 project-based vouchers, MPHA is also supporting the project with sponsor-based awards to support 24 studio units. These sponsor-based awards bring an additional form of financial assistance to the project, offering Alliance Housing flexibility to use funds in a way they deem best for residents.

🌟 Yesterday, ED/CEO Abdi Warsame joined Mayor Jacob Frey, Angela Conley Hennepin County Commissioner District 4, the Wall Companies, and Lupe Development Partners to celebrate the grand opening of Snelling Yards! This new building in the Hiawatha neighborhood includes 95 affordable family housing units, with 25 being supported by MPHA project-based vouchers. Of the 25 MPHA-supported units, 13 are designated for veterans.

Yesterday, MPHA staff presented the agency’s five-year levy capital plan to the City of Minneapolis Government Board of Estimate and Taxation. The plan includes $2 million to support full rehab of two mid-rise buildings in South Minneapolis while committing $3 million to the long-term stabilization of Heritage Park.

This five-year capital plan is part of a proposed $6 million investment in near-term needs & long-term stabilization efforts to help restore Heritage Park. If approved, this would bring MPHA’s investment to >$18M since 2022 to support the site: bit.ly/HeritagePark6M

This summer, MPHA residents and the Minneapolis Highrise Representative Council (MHRC) are joining staff from MPHA, City of Minneapolis Health Department and City of Minneapolis Government Public Works Department to help ensure residents have safe active transportation routes available near MPHA buildings. Through the Safe Routes to Public Housing (SRTPH) initiative, MPHA residents will provide feedback and insight into the barriers they face walking, rolling or riding around their buildings.

Funded through a Minnesota Department of Transportation active transportation planning grant, SRTPH is modeled after the City of Minneapolis’ successful Safe Routes to School framework. The initiative aims to improve the safety, social connections, and health outcomes of residents through safe transportation access.

The project focuses on two transportation corridors near MPHA buildings that are slated for upcoming capital improvement projects by the city: 13th Avenue Northeast (between Water Street Northeast and Second Street Northeast) and Seventh Street North (between 10th Street North and East Lyndale Avenue North).

Thanks to the American Heart Association, MPHA has four new blood pressure hubs located at three high-rises and the Cora McCorvey Health and Wellness Center! These hubs make it easier for MPHA residents to check their blood pressure and have already spurred larger conversations about healthy living. Over the summer, the various buildings received training on how to use the machines.

Last month, Stable Homes Stable Schools (SHSS) launched a three-year research project to study the program’s impacts on children’s housing stability, educational outcomes, and well-being.

Led by a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and the UChicago Urban Labs, the project will combine quasi-experimental and qualitative studies to help inform future program improvements. The research is funded through a $1.1 million grant from CoLab at The Constellation Fund, with the City of Minneapolis Government providing an additional $150,000 to support administrative services for the project.

Stable Homes Stable Schools is a pioneering partnership between MPHA, the City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County Government, and Minneapolis Public Schools, along with the YMCA of the North as the service partner, working to reduce homelessness among families with elementary-aged kids in Minneapolis and improve immediate and long-term educational outcomes for students impacted by housing instability. The program is a holistic approach to addressing homelessness through prevention (emergency short- and medium-term assistance) and intervention (multi-year rental assistance and support services). Since 2019, more than 7,930 kids and 2,840 families have benefited from the program.

📢 Earlier this month, MPHA staff reviewed the agency’s 2027 MTW Annual Plan with residents. Residents were able to learn about MPHA’s goals, priorities, and most importantly, share their opinions on the plan. Yesterday, MPHA’s Board of Commissioners voted to approve a $6 million investment in near-term needs and long-term stabilization efforts to help restore Heritage Park. MPHA’s proposed $6 million investment falls into two buckets: $3 million for near-term needs and $3 million to support long-term stabilization of Heritage Park. In both near- and long-term work, MPHA will provide financial resources to the site’s court-appointed receiver, Certus Financial, who will then deploy the funding in close coordination with MPHA, the City of Minneapolis, and the site’s property manager, Property Services and Solutions.

The plan now travels to the Minneapolis Board of Estimate and Taxation, where agency leaders will present the proposed investment on September 9. If approved, this would bring MPHA’s investment to more than $18 million since 2022 to support the site.

Heritage Park is currently controlled by a court-appointed receiver. In December 2025, the site’s former owner, McCormack Baron Salazar, agreed to assign the property to creditors. Subsequently, a Hennepin County court removed McCormack Baron Salazar from operational control of the site and appointed a third-party receiver, Certus Financial, to take control of Heritage Park. While MPHA owns the land Heritage Park sits on, the agency has not owned, operated, or controlled any housing units at Heritage Park, including units receiving public housing subsidies, since it was built.
