The City of Minneapolis Health Department is one of 10 charter departments established in the City Charter in 1867. The City of Minneapolis has a long history in public health. The Minneapolis Board of Health (later called the Minneapolis Health Department and then the Minneapolis Department of Health and Family Support) was formed in 1867 immediately following the incorporation of the City of Min

neapolis. The department performed a variety of functions including infectious disease surveillance and control; water, food and veterinary inspections; garbage removal; vital records; and laboratory services. The City also operated the Minneapolis General Hospital, which opened its doors in 1887. August is National Breastfeeding Month! This month, we recognize the importance of supporting breastfeeding families and the positive impact breastfeeding has on both babies and moms.

Mothers who get support during pregnancy and after childbirth are more likely to start breastfeeding and continue doing it longer.

Families can find many local resources to help with challenges they may face. The Minnesota Breastfeeding Coalition shares information and support to help individuals and families reach their lactation goals.

Get money to upgrade your home or building’s cooling and heating system with an air source heat pump.

An air-source heat pump cools and heats your home by using electricity to move heat between the indoor and outdoor air. It moves heat inside in winter and outside in summer. This is all done without burning fuel, like natural gas.

You’ll save money on utility bills and stay comfortable all year long!

Use the City's Green Funding and Program Finder tool to find out how to get money on your air source heat pump and more home energy upgrades today. https://www.minneapolismn.gov/government/programs-initiatives/creating-climate-legacy/green-funding-program-finder/

Don't skip the weekly watering during these hot and dry stretches. Trees need hydration too! 💦

*Water slowly with a slow-flow hose or bucket to soak the soil to 18–24 inches
*Water until the soil is soaked, not just wet on top
*Water in the evening
*Build a mulch ring around the tree to keep the soil moist. Do this about 3-5 feet from the trunk.

People can get sick from the heat if they participate in physical activities during hot weather, especially during the hottest part of the day – the afternoon. If people must be outside, they should:
*Limit activity to morning and evening hours
*Pace their activity and take frequent breaks in the shade
*Drink plenty of fluids
*Wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat
*Find out where your nearest cooling center is. Find yours at -https://www.hennepincounty.gov/services/assistance/safety/places-to-cool-off-in-extreme-heat

Dangerous heat and humidity will build back in Saturday and Sunday. Highs in the 90s and dew points in the 70s will send heat indices into the 100 to 108 degree range each day. An Extreme Heat Watch is in effect across southern Minnesota and the metro area.

Outdoor air quality affects our everyday health. And everyone deserves to breathe clean air.

Help monitor air quality through our Community Air Monitoring project. The City is looking for residents, businesses and organizations to host a PurpleAir sensor. We test local air quality and report results to the community.
