In 1926, a Mississippi River water quality survey found only three living fish in the 42-mile stretch from Minneapolis to Red Wing, confirming that the river had become little more than an open sewer for a growing metropolis.

Today, the river is a thriving national park, a haven for wildlife, and a cherished recreational destination. The Sacred Water, Shared Future campaign marks this miraculous turnaround, celebrating 100 years of recovery and inspiring the next century of stewardship.

Read the story.

Our Growing Communities program transforms tax-forfeited and vacant land into vibrant urban agriculture sites.

These sites offer opportunities for youth and adults to learn about agriculture and create a climate resilient space in their neighborhood. The projects increase food security, offer land to grow culturally relevant food, and bring community together for shared meals.

In recent years, our partners grew over 4,200 pounds of food, and just in 2025, 1,300 residents participated in programming or benefited directly from the harvest.
