Prior to Congress passing the act making Labor Day a legal holiday, the first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. There was roughly 10,000 to 20,000 men and women based on final reports.

Labor Day was intended as a “general holiday for the laboring classes” to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”

Now, many celebrate the day with friends and family in an array of ways. Some many celebrate with barbeques, travel or camping trips, parades, or retail sales. Some areas of the country may host parades or parties in celebration of the holiday. We’d love to hear how you plan to celebrate Labor Day, share in the comments.

While Labor Day is generally a fun-filled day, MRFD would like to remind the public to celebrate safely.

• Be sure to abide by local fire laws/restrictions.

• Always arrange for a designated driver if consuming alcohol. And always wear a seat belt.

• Wear life jackets if recreating on or near the water.

• Never leave a hot grill unattended. Keep grills away from sidings, decks, railings, and overhanging tree branches.

• Be sure to stay hydrated and use sun protection.

As Labor Day approaches, it is important to remember to celebrate safely.

🚨 According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is about one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality every 42 minutes.

🛑 Impaired driving should never happen. This Labor Day, we remind everyone to make safe choices and plan ahead. If you plan to consume alcohol, make sure you have a designated driver or arrange for a safe ride home. 🍻➡️🚗

⚠️ A Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher is the legal limit for driving in all 50 states, but even below that level, alcohol can impair your ability to drive safely.

🔑 Don’t let friends or family get behind the wheel after drinking. Take their keys, help them find a sober ride, and make sure everyone gets home safely. 🏠❤️

One alcohol-impaired-driving fatality is one too many.

🚗💨 Drive sober. Get home safe. ❤️

🔥 Employee Spotlight: Our Amazing HR Director! 🔥

We’re shining the spotlight on Jason, our incredible HR Director!

In a fire district, HR is about so much more than paperwork and policies. Jason plays an important role in supporting the people behind the mission—from helping recruit and welcome new members to supporting our firefighters, staff, and leadership every step of the way.

With a great sense of humor, a positive attitude, and a genuine commitment to our people, Jason brings energy and fun to a job that comes with plenty of serious responsibilities. Whether they’re helping solve a tough problem, celebrating a team accomplishment, or simply bringing a little laughter to the day, Jason has a way of making everyone feel supported and valued.

We’re grateful for everything Jason does to help make our district a great place to work—and for reminding us that even in the fire service, there’s always room for a little fun! 🚒❤️

Please join us in giving a well-deserved shout-out to Jason for all they do for our district and our people!
