Murphy Helwig Library in Monona kicked off its summer reading program—which has the theme “Plant a Seed, Read!”—on June 3. Kids signed up and picked up their reading minutes calendar, then enjoyed a program led by Michael Bechtel, associate professor of science education at Wartburg College. Bechtel shared stories from his trips around the world, including the Amazon, and showed attendees some of his unique pets: a cockroach, beetle, spider, toad, frog, turtle, tortoise, bearded dragon (pictured here), chicken, rat and various snakes. Summer reading program events are planned at the library every Wednesday, beginning at 4 p.m., until July 22—the day of the ending party. 📚
