DYK that doesn’t get treated before it reaches our local creeks, lakes, and rivers? That means anything left on our driveways, lawns, and streets can wash directly into our during rainfall. This includes Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) like:
🧴 Cleaners
🎨 Paints & varnishes
🔋 Batteries
🛢️ Used oil & antifreeze
💊 Medications
📱 Old electronics

When HHW isn’t stored or disposed of properly, these pollutants can harm wildlife, degrade water quality, and impact our community’s drinking water sources.

Protect our streams by:
✔️ Choosing non‑toxic or eco‑friendly products
✔️ Reading labels and following proper usage instructions
✔️ Taking HHW to approved disposal or collection facilities

Every small action helps keep the Town of Morrisville, NC waterways clean and healthy. Let’s work together to protect our community! Thanks to NC Clean Water Education Partnership for the graphic!

☕🌎 Happy National Coffee Day!

When you sip your morning coffee, you’re tasting more than beans. You’re tasting the quality of the water used to grow, process, and brew it.

Clean means cleaner rivers, lakes, and groundwater. These sources provide the fresh water that farms depend on to grow coffee plants around the world. When stormwater becomes polluted, that pollution can travel downstream and impact agriculture, ecosystems, and even the water that eventually ends up in your cup.

That’s why taking care of stormwater right here in our community matters globally. Small actions (like picking up litter, disposing of household chemicals properly, and keeping yard waste out of stormwater drains) help keep the Town of Morrisville, NC healthy.

And yes . . . even leftover coffee and sugary syrups shouldn’t go into stormwater drains, because they can harm water quality downstream.

So today, celebrate National Coffee Day with a clean cup and a clean commitment. Protect stormwater → protect our waterways → protect our morning brew.

🌧️ What Exactly Is Stormwater Runoff? When rain falls, it doesn’t just soak into the ground, especially in developed areas. Instead, it flows across impervious surfaces like roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and rooftops. As it moves, this water picks up everything in its path: oil, litter, yard chemicals, sediment, and other pollutants.

This “runoff” then travels through drains and pipes, heading straight into our streams and creeks without being treated.

That means whatever goes on the ground . . . often ends up in our . So, why does stormwater runoff matter?

Stormwater runoff can:
• Increase pollution in local streams
• Lead to flooding during heavy rains
• Harm aquatic life
• Reduce overall water quality for the Town of Morrisville, NC

How YOU Can Help:
• Pick up pet waste every time
• Reduce fertilizers and lawn chemicals
• Never dump anything down storm drains
• Direct rainwater to grassy areas or use rain barrels
• Keep car fluids from leaking onto driveways and streets

Every small action helps keep our creeks cleaner and our community healthier. Let’s stay stormwater smart together!

Did you know that every piece of litter on the ground has the potential to wash into our drains during the next rain? Stormwater drains don’t treat water. They carry it directly to our creeks, streams, and lakes.

The photos in the post show litter impacting the stormwater system. Once litter gets to our waterways, it has a path to the ocean.

By doing something as simple as properly tossing trash or securing your recycling bin, you’re helping protect the Town of Morrisville, NC , wildlife, and community health. You're also stopping is from getting to the ocean.

✨ Small actions = big impact!
• Pick up litter when you see it
• Secure your trash/recycling carts
• Keep stormwater drains clear of debris

Let’s work together to keep our town clean, healthy, and beautiful.

🌧️ Sediment: Our #1 Stormwater Pollutant!

Did you know that sediment is the #1 pollutant in runoff? When rain hits bare soil, it picks up loose dirt and carries it straight into our creeks and streams. This impacts water clarity and aquatic life.

🍂 Fall = Perfect Time to Protect Bare Soil!

Now is the best time to sow cool‑season grasses on bare areas. These grasses establish quickly in the fall and help lock soil in place. 🌱 Experts recommend seeding between the middle of September and the middle of October for strong growth.

🛠️ Easy Ways to Reduce Sediment Pollution:

• 🌾 Cover bare soil with grass seed, mulch, pine straw, or erosion control material
• 🌱 Plant cool‑season grasses now for healthy, protective groundcover
• 🧱 Keep soil in place in construction or high‑traffic spots

Stabilizing bare soil keeps sediment out of the Town of Morrisville, NC , helping preserve clean streams, healthy habitats, and our beautiful local environment. 💙💧

🍁 Happy Autumnal Equinox! 🍂

Today marks the moment when daylight and nighttime are nearly equal. A natural reminder of balance. This year it will occur at 8:05 p.m. EDT. As we shift into fall, leaves are changing color and they have already begun to drop off of trees. 🍂

When leaves gather on streets, sidewalks, and drains, they can block flow, cause localized flooding, and add excess nutrients to our as they break down.

You can help keep the Town of Morrisville, NC streams healthy this season by:
• Keeping storm drains clear of leaves and debris
• Maintaining vegetated areas to slow runoff
• Properly disposing of yard waste. Never pile them in the street. If you are collecting them, bag them and put them at the curb for collection 2x/month.
• Leave the leaves! Leaving leaves on gardens and lawns provides shelter/food for wildlife, is a natural fertilizer, and helps soil retain water.

Together, we can enjoy the beauty of autumn while protecting our stormwater systems and the waterways they feed.
