Plant one garlic clove, harvest an entire bulb! 🧄
Garlic is one of the easiest crops to grow in Utah, and fall is a great time to get it in the ground. Each clove you plant can grow into a bulb with 10–15 cloves!
First, choose your garlic:
🧄 Hardneck: Strong flavor, easy to peel, shorter storage life.
🧄 Softneck: Stores longer and is great for braiding.
🧄 Elephant: Mild flavor, but doesn't store as well.
Then, get planting!
1. Choose a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil.
2. Add compost or fertilizer before planting.
3. Separate bulbs into individual cloves.
4. Plant each clove pointy end up, 2–3 inches deep and 3–4 inches apart, with rows 6–10 inches apart.
Once planted, mulch to help conserve water and reduce weeds. Water deeply, fertilize with nitrogen in April and May, and remove flowering stems to encourage bigger bulbs.
When the tops start turning yellow, it's time to harvest! Cure your garlic in a dry, shaded spot with good airflow before storing.
A little work now means homegrown garlic later!
