In May, Ivonne Moreno-Rodriguez, Social Work Supervisor at Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC, joined humanitarian workers, faith leaders, and advocates in the annual Migrant Trail Walk through the Sonoran Desert. The 7-day pilgrimage honors migrants who have lost their lives while seeking safety, reunification with loved ones, and opportunities for a better future in the United States.

Evelyn migrated to the U.S. from Honduras in 2019 at the age of seventeen. After knocking on many doors for help, CIS-NYC’s door was the one that finally opened. Our legal team was able to support her throughout the process of petitioning for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) status, which provides a pathway to a green card for young people who have been abandoned, abused, or neglected by a parent.

CIS-NYC’s legal team helped Evelyn to have an existing removal order dismissed and ensured she had access to legal representation in family court through our growing pro bono program. With our continued support, Evelyn finally received a work permit and protection from deportation. She is now able to live and work in the US without fear, and will soon have the opportunity to adjust her status and receive a Green Card.

Juana is a direct sales consultant and mother of four from Mexico currently living in the Bronx. She came to CIS-NYC seeking counseling support to manage intense stress that was impacting her daily life. After initially feeling anxious about trying counseling, she now feels like her life has changed for the better. She feels more confident in her coping skills, she is currently taking ESL classes that she found independently, and she continues to be a strong and caring mother and community member.
