New York Memory Center Meeting the needs of people living with Alzheimer's and dementia-related disorders

Originally established in 1983 under the name Park Slope Geriatric Day Center, New York Memory Center is a freestanding, nonprofit, community-based agency providing services to adults who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease or other forms of dementia. Programs include The Lotus Club, daytime and evening wellness programs and peer support for adults with early-stage memory loss; Memory Life Services for people with middle to later stages of dementia; support groups and services for caregivers; advocacy for people with dementia; and more.

Memory Center Artist-in-Residence Ismail Butera got dancers up on their feet with "Jambalaya" and singing along with "Your Cheating Heart" and lots more familiar songs. Yesterday Babs, with The Jewish Museum arts education program, brought two samples of artwork from the museum. She talked about the artists and history of the work. Then members get a chance to create their own work, copying the style or colors or drawing whatever they choose. She even brings along some music to listen to while the artists let their creative juices flow.

It involves a purposeful attempt to leave one place to go somewhere else, often because the person believes they need to be at work, care for a loved one, or return "home"—even if they are already there.... For caregivers, wandering can be especially stressful.
