Today marks 10 years since 49 people were murdered at Pulse nightclub in Orlando in one of the deadliest acts of anti-LGBTQ+ violence in our nation’s history.

We remember the lives stolen, honor the survivors, and stand with the families and communities forever changed by that tragedy. Pulse was meant to be a place of joy and belonging. Instead, it became the site of unimaginable loss fueled by hate.

As we mark this dark anniversary, we reaffirm a simple truth: everyone deserves to live, love, gather, and thrive without fear. We honor the 49 lives lost by continuing the work to build communities safe from hate, bigotry, and violence.

Civil rights leader Medgar Evers was assassinated on this day in 1963, in his own driveway in Jackson, Mississippi, and in front of the family he loved and fought so fiercely to protect.

As the NAACP's first field secretary in Mississippi, Evers dedicated his life to challenging segregation, expanding voting rights, and confronting racial terror at great personal risk. He understood that the struggle for freedom demanded courage, sacrifice, and unwavering conviction.

His legacy continues to inspire generations more than six decades later, because though white supremacist violence cut his life short, it could not silence the movement he helped build.

Today, we honor Medgar Evers' sacrifices and stand with the Evers family as they challenge efforts to erase his legacy, including attempts by the Pentagon to remove his name from the Navy ship USNS Medgar Evers. His contributions to this nation must never be forgotten.

We are angry.
We are hurt.
We are confused.

But we will NOT go back.

At the National Urban League, we're fighting for communities too often pushed to the margins, especially in the face of attacks on civil rights protections and economic opportunity.

Your support helps power that fight, ensuring every family gets the chance to thrive, not just survive.

On behalf of the Memphis Urban League_Official, The Legal Defense Fund joined the NAACP lawsuit challenging ’s newly enacted congressional map that intentionally discriminates against Black voters.

“Memphis has paid too high a price for the right to vote to have its power carved up behind closed doors.

The Memphis Urban League’s complaint speaks directly to the question of whether our democracy will honor equal protection and the Voting Rights Act, or tolerate modern-day vote dilution. We stand with the Memphis Urban League and the people of Memphis in demanding maps that reflect communities, not discrimination. -- Marc H. Morial
