The Towers collapsed within hours, the world was changed forever, and the New York District of the Army Corps of Engineers ─ assisted by Corps personnel from other Districts ─ embarked on a massive disaster response like no other.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has completed three new sand access paths at Downtown Montauk, replacing wooden beach crossovers damaged by severe storms.

Constructed as part of the Fire Island to Montauk Point Project, the 20-foot-wide paths provide convenient public access while requiring less maintenance and better complementing the surrounding dunes. Sea grass planted along the paths will help retain sand and protect the integrity of the dune system.

The work was fully federally funded through the Sandy Program and builds upon the approximately 450,000 cubic yards of sand placed on Downtown Montauk’s beaches in 2024. That beach nourishment continues to perform as designed, reducing flood risk to residents, homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.

Today we’re in Albany, NY, where employees at Troy Lock & Dam are receiving the Voluntary Protection Program Star Award – the highest safety rating from the Occupational Safety and Health Authority - OSHA recognizing exemplary achievement in workplace health and safety.

NY District Commander Col. Eric Swenson, Army Corps Leaders and OSHA officials presented the awards during a formal ceremony. The honors represent years of discipline, teamwork and an unwavering commitment to protecting one another.

North Atlantic Division Commander Brig. Gen. Jesse Curry, New York District Operations Division Chief Randall Hintz and Marine Superintendent William Lyness welcomed a military delegation from Bosnia and Herzegovina to New York District’s Caven Point Marine Terminal in New Jersey for mission briefings, including one focusing on an emergency preparedness exercise in 2021 that U.S. Army Corps of Engineers North Atlantic Division and the Maryland National Guard participated in with the Bosnian military/government.

The delegation also learned about New York’s emergency responses to 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, as well as took part in a harbor inspection aboard the patrol vessel, MORITZ.

The Bosnian delegation included:

⚓ A safer, deeper Lake Montauk Harbor is now ready to support commercial fishing, recreational boating, and U.S. Coast Guard operations.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, working with the Town of East Hampton, recently completed dredging the heavily traveled navigation channel, increasing its depth from approximately 12 feet to 17 feet. The project removed about 87,000 cubic yards of sand and 10,000 cubic yards of clay, improving safe access to the harbor and strengthening its role as a refuge during severe storms.

The dredged sand was beneficially reused along the shoreline west of the inlet jetty, where natural currents will help replenish nearby eroded beaches. This $10 million federal-local partnership demonstrates how smart infrastructure investments can improve navigation, support New York’s largest commercial fishing fleet, strengthen the regional economy, and protect coastal communities.

As New York District Commander Col. Alexander Young noted, maintaining federal navigation channels is a critical Army Corps mission across hundreds of miles of waterways in New York and New Jersey. 👷‍♀️🚢🎣
