In 2024, there were 11,288 fatalities in speeding-related crashes — a decrease of 5% (11,288) from 2023.
Speeding-related crashes accounted for 29% of total traffic fatalities in 2024.

Through July 31, 2026 the Newport Police Department and other Law Enforcement agencies across the state are participating in the National Speed Mobilization.

🚨 REMINDER: Golf Cart Ordinance in Effect in the City of Newport 🚨

The Newport Police Department would like to remind residents that golf carts are permitted on certain city streets under City Ordinance No. 1190, but there are important rules that must be followed to keep everyone safe.

✅ Golf carts MAY be operated:
• On residential city streets with a posted speed limit of 25 MPH or less
• Only during daylight hours
• Only on city streets (NOT on state highways, federal highways, or county roads)

👤 Operator Requirements:
• Must be at least 14 years old, or
• Be accompanied by a licensed driver

🛑 Safety Requirements:
• Golf carts must be in good operating condition with adequate brakes
• Operators must obey all traffic laws, including driving with the flow of traffic and as far to the right side of the roadway as practical.

⚠️ Violations:
Failure to follow the ordinance may result in a misdemeanor citation with fines of up to $50, with increased penalties for repeat offenses.

Our goal is not to issue citations, but to ensure everyone can safely enjoy the use of golf carts while protecting motorists, pedestrians, and other roadway users.

As we celebrate our nation's freedom with family, friends, fireworks, and festivities, the Newport Police Department wants to remind everyone to make safety your top priority.

Our officers are continuing increased patrols throughout the holiday as part of the State July 4th DWI Mobilization. Our goal is not to write tickets or make arrests—it's to ensure everyone gets home safely.

If you're celebrating today:
🚗 Have a designated sober driver before you leave.
📱 Use a rideshare or call a friend or family member if you've been drinking.
🏠 If you're impaired, stay where you are.
🔑 If you see someone attempting to drive impaired, take their keys and help them find a safe ride home.

One bad decision can change lives forever. Help us keep our roads safe and make this Independence Day memorable for all the right reasons.

The Newport Police Department is partnering with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from July 1, 2026, through July 5, 2026, as part of the State July 4th DWI Mobilization campaign.

During this mobilization, officers will conduct increased patrols focused on identifying and removing impaired drivers from our roadways. Our goal is simple: to save lives by preventing impaired driving crashes before they happen.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts everyone at risk. If you plan to celebrate over the Fourth of July holiday, make a plan before you go:

• Designate a sober driver.
• Use a rideshare or taxi.
• Stay where you are if you’ve been drinking.
• Never let a friend drive impaired.

Together, we can make this Fourth of July holiday a safe one for everyone.

The Newport Police Department extends our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the officers and staff of the Mark Tree Police Department, as well as the family, friends, and loved ones of the Officer Howard who tragically lost his life in the line of duty this morning.

The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Newport Police Department are with the Mark Tree Police Department, Officer Howard’s family, and everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy.

The Newport Police Department has received reports of individuals receiving phone calls from someone falsely claiming to be a representative of the Newport Police Department and requesting donations or money.

This is a scam.

The Newport Police Department will never contact you by phone to solicit donations, collect money, serve warrants, resolve warrants, or request payment of any kind.

If you receive a suspicious call:
• Do not provide personal or financial information.
• Do not send money or make any payments.
• Hang up immediately.
• If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the Newport Police Department directly using a known, official phone number.

Please share this information with family and friends, especially elderly loved ones who are often targeted by scammers.

This campaign aims to save lives and remind everyone to wear their seat belts—every trip, every time. Officers will be out in full force enforcing seat belt laws to keep our community safe.
