The Berkley School District Board of Education took action at their Special Meeting on October 26, 2026, to appoint a new Board member.

Dr. Maximillian (Max) Shear, of Huntington Woods, was appointed to the open 26-month term, with unanimous support. The Board took action to appoint Dr. Shear after interviewing the final two applicants.

Dr. Shear is a senior design researcher for Southern Glazer’s W**e & Spirits, a Berkley High School graduate (Class of 2002), and a third-generation resident of Huntington Woods. He earned his PhD in Applied Developmental Psychology with a concentration in Research Methods and Statistics from George Mason University. Dr. Shear has been active in the District and community, including being the Burton PTA Treasurer, Burton PTA Board observer, community t-ball coach, and former Burton lunch aide. Dr. Shear has two children in the Berkley School District who attend Burton Elementary School.

Dr. Shear said, “I am so incredibly proud to represent our community and join the Board of Education. It is truly an honor to be appointed as a Trustee, especially given the exceptional quality of all the candidates who stepped forward. Above all, I am thrilled to join such a talented, dedicated group of board members. I look forward to partnering with them and bringing my background to support our administrators, educators, students, and broader community. I am eager to put my expertise, passion, and personal commitment to work for Berkley Schools, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve.”

Board President Keith Logsdon said, “I am pleased to welcome Dr. Shear to the Board of Education. Each Board member felt his service to the District as an active PTA member was a key factor for his appointment as well as his long connection with the District. I look forward to getting to know Dr. Shear and serving alongside him. I appreciate all of the community members who applied for Board service.”

Dr. Shear will serve until December 31, 2028.

Unified Sports joins people with and without disabilities on the same team. It is dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experience. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Berkley Schools welcomed the community to the high school for an Open House and Ribbon Cutting ceremony for the Performing Arts Center.

Superintendent Scott Francis welcomed guests, thanked voters for passing the 2023 Bond, the District’s professional partners, BHS administrators, the District Bond team, performing arts teachers, and students for their patience. Students from orchestra, band, choir, and drama cut the official ribbon before guests entered for their tours. Inside the new spaces, students took guests on tours, sharing about each of the renovations and why the construction was important for their experiences and learning.

Guests were able to see the new lobby addition and renovation, the renovated theater with new finishes, digital screen, sound, and lighting systems, the new Black Box Theatre, new Instrument Commons, the Band and Orchestra classrooms, and the new music practice rooms.

The first concert in the renovated space is the BHS Orchestra Concert on Thursday, October 29 at 7 pm.

Join the Berkley Education Foundation (BEF) for its annual BEF Open, an X-Golf Tournament, November 13, 6:30-10:30 pm. Guests will have the chance to support the BEF by playing a round of golf, being a spectator, playing golf-related games for prizes or sponsoring a game.

Golfers, in teams of four, will have the chance to play 12 holes at X-Golf on a world-renowned course. Teams will play an alternate ball scramble and enjoy hot dogs and mac and cheese at the turn from The Mean We**ie.

NEW: After 12 holes, the top three teams will enter a one-hole playoff to compete for the grand prize. Second and third place teams will receive a prize, too.

Wait? Didn’t we play 18 holes last year? Yes. The BEF Open has been an 18-hole tournament in the past, but many groups had a tough time finishing in the timeframe allowed. The 12-hole tournament should alleviate the concern of finishing and give teams something new to compete for - a spot in the playoff!

Only 10 teams are available. Teams can utilize mulligans and sabotages to help their scores.

Golfers can also enter the Longest Drive contest, Closest to the Pin contest and Putting Challenge. Winners take home big prizes.

Not a golfer? Come for a Friday night out!

Enjoy an evening out, courtesy of the BEF, as a spectator. Spectator tickets are $25/person and include appetizers & hot dogs and an opportunity to play in the individual golf competitions.

On Thursday, October 8, District School Resource Officer Sgt. Dave Arney visited Rogers TK and Kindergarten classes to talk about fire safety. Sergeant Arney talked with the students about fire safety, put on his full fire gear, and showed kids what he would look like if he was in their house during a fire, so the children wouldn’t be afraid. In addition, Sgt. Arney took the students outside to learn about the fire truck and its equipment.

Safe Schools Week Day 5: Mental Wellness & Response to Student Conflict

We know that students need to feel safe and supported in order to be ready to learn. We also know that the idea of safety goes beyond the physical spaces of the building. Students need to feel emotionally safe and that they belong in order to fully engage in their learning as well. As a District, we have focused a lot of attention on the social emotional well-being of our students, especially over the last few years.

Today’s Safe Schools Week message pertains to mental wellness, response to student conflict, community services and resources available to staff and students and important information on the new Michigan laws regarding safe fi***rm storage: https://bit.ly/4zELFx9
