Nate Miley was first elected to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors representing District 4 in November 2000 and is currently serving his sixth term representing portions of the City of Oakland and the City of Pleasanton, as well as Ashland, Castro Valley, Cherryland, El Portal Ridge, Fairmont Terrace, Fairview and Hill Crest Knolls. In January 2023, he was appointed President by his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors, this is the second time that Supervisor Miley has served in this capacity during his tenure on the Board. Throughout his time in elected office, Supervisor Miley has fought to protect open space, strengthen our healthcare system, and create more livable and safe neighborhoods, while improving transportation, agriculture and urban farming, air quality, healthcare, public safety, and social services. Supervisor Miley authored legislation to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable by creating nation’s first no-cost drug disposal ordinance, championed the successful passage of Measure A which raises $100 million annually to support vital health care programs within Alameda County and worked to ensure that communities have a voice within local government. Supervisor Miley has dedicated his entire adult life to community and public service beginning in Oakland as both a Jesuit volunteer and organizer with Oakland Community Organizations (OCO). He has trained hundreds of grassroots volunteers, advocates, and community groups across the United States through the National Center for Urban Ethnic Affairs. Prior to representing District 4 as an Alameda County Supervisor, he had the honor of serving the residents of Oakland City Council District 6 where he earned the moniker “maverick” for his tenacity in challenging the status quo and pursuing novel, grassroots-based solutions which leveraged community engagement to tackle issues and problems. As a policy maker, Supervisor Miley believes in providing the community with opportunities to engage with their government and to deliver service to his highly diverse constituent base. In 1986, Supervisor Miley discovered his passion – advocating for older adults who do not often have a voice – and founded the United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County (USOAC). USOAC empowers older adults to improve their quality of life through advocacy, independence, health and wellness. Supervisor Miley has served USOAC for more than 35 years and was elected President of its Board of Directors in November 2010. Supervisor Miley graduated from Franklin & Marshall College and finished Law School at the University of Maryland in 1976. He is the proud father of two children and three grandchildren, and has been a proud Oakland resident for over 30 years.
