Today, we said goodbye to Major Jamie McGuckin.

We gathered to celebrate your life, to honor the man and leader you were, and then stood by your graveside for one final farewell. I’m still trying to make sense of the grief and the reality that you are gone.

Tonight, while searching for some understanding and comfort, I came across an email you once sent to our staff at the Oklahoma County Detention Center.

You wrote it on April 6, following the passing of Clinton Vaught while he was at boot camp. In a moment when our people were hurting, you did what you so often did—you found words to help others carry their grief.

The email was titled “A Prayer for Those in Mourning.”
Dear Lord, In the depths of our hearts, we carry the weight of sadness and the ache of mourning. We acknowledge these emotions for they are a testament to the love we held for those we have lost and the pain of their absence in our lives.
Help us, dear God, to embrace our sadness without guilt or shame. Grant us the wisdom to understand that grief is a natural and necessary part of the human experience. In our mourning, may we find strength in our memories, solace in our tears, and comfort in the support of those who walk this journey with us.
Lord, we also pray for the promise of joy in the morning. We trust in your unfailing love and the hope of new beginnings. Help us recognize the small glimmers of light amid the darkness, the moments of peace amidst the pain. Guide us on the path to healing so that as the dawn breaks, we may find joy once more. May our hearts be open to the beauty of life, even as we remember those who are no longer with us. In the name of your boundless love and grace, we pray. Amen.

Today, those words you shared to comfort us after the loss of someone else feel as though they have found their way back to us when we need them most—only this time, we are mourning you.

There is something incredibly difficult, yet meaningful, about finding your words on the very day we laid you to rest.

You spent so much of your life serving others, leading others, encouraging others, and being there during some of their hardest moments. And somehow, even after saying goodbye to you, you are still doing that.

Rest easy, Major.

Your watch is over, but your words, your leadership, your friendship, and the impact you made on so many lives remain with us.

Until we meet again, Major. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of one of our own, Major Jamie McGuckin, who passed away suddenly on July 30, 2026.

Major McGuckin was a proud military veteran and was just two days shy of celebrating 15 years of dedicated service with the Oklahoma County Detention Center. Throughout his career, he served with unwavering commitment, exceptional leadership, and a genuine heart for both the mission and the people around him.

Jamie gave everything he had to this organization. He led with humility, integrity, and compassion, always willing to step forward to help a coworker, mentor a teammate, or serve those entrusted to our care. His generosity of spirit and selfless dedication left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working beside him.

His legacy is not only found in the years he served, but in the countless lives he touched through his kindness, strength, and unwavering commitment to others. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always honored as a member of our OCDC family.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jamie’s family, friends, and all who loved him during this incredibly difficult time. We ask that you keep them, along with our OCDC family, in your thoughts and prayers.

Rest easy, Major McGuckin. Your watch has ended, but your legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will live on in all of us.

The Oklahoma County Detention Center joins our community in mourning the passing of Chief M.T. Berry, a respected law enforcement leader and dedicated public servant.

Chief Berry faithfully served on the Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority Board of Trustees from its formation in 2019 until his retirement in 2023. During a pivotal time in the transition of jail governance, his experience, wisdom, and steady leadership helped guide the Authority and shape its future. His commitment to public service and the people of Oklahoma County leaves a lasting legacy.

As former Board Chairman Brian Maughan shared, “His background and leadership in law enforcement provided a tremendous perspective which was extremely helpful in the transition from the sheriff to the trust. Chief Berry was among our longest serving trustees to date when he retired in 2023.”

We also recognize the heartfelt words of Trustee Rev. Derrick Scobey, who remembered Chief Berry not only as a colleague but as a respected leader whose impact will not be forgotten.

On behalf of the Oklahoma County Detention Center, we extend our deepest condolences to Chief Berry’s family, friends, fellow trustees, and the many law enforcement professionals whose lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.

Thank you, Chief Berry, for your unwavering service, leadership, and dedication to Oklahoma County. Your legacy will continue to inspire those who serve after you.

🖤 Rest in peace, Chief M.T. Berry
