After 28 years of dedicated service, Captain Rich Lane is retiring from the Orlando Police Department!
Captain Lane began his law enforcement career with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, where he served for two years before joining OPD in 1998.
Throughout his career, he worked his way up the ranks, serving in numerous assignments, including Patrol, multiple Bike Units, Criminal Investigations, Homicide, Training, DED, the Airport, and South Patrol Division. Known as an exceptional police officer, he built a reputation for his strong work ethic, investigative skills, and determination to get the job done.
One of his greatest contributions was transforming OPD’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) from a traditional heavy-gear and shield approach into a faster, more mobile bicycle response unit. Under his leadership, the team grew to more than 120 bicycle-equipped officers ready to deploy during major events and emergencies.
But his true passion was the Ranch and Grove Unit. As South Patrol Division Captain, he helped take the unit to the next level, strengthening its operations and expanding its impact on the community. He wasn’t the type of commander who wanted to sit behind a desk. He loved being out there working alongside his officers, doing what he enjoyed most: police work.
Beyond his accomplishments, Captain Lane was a respected leader who was loved by his officers. He took care of his people, led by example, and was the kind of commander officers wanted to work for.
Captain Lane leaves behind a lasting impact on OPD and the many officers who had the privilege of working alongside him.
