Our Story
Our Community Cardboard City raises awareness of homelessness in the Valley and serves as a fundraiser for the guest’s services our Community’s Family Promise Mat-Su shelter for families with kids and their pets. Participants in this event experience “homelessness” firsthand by spending a night in cardboard boxes (tarps are ok!) at the State Fairgrounds and eating only soup and bread. The 2018 Cardboard City was held in June. We had a little sun, a little rain, live music. homeless eduucation and we all became so thankful for our cozy homes the next day. If you missed it, our next event will be in the summer of 2019 and the date will be announced on this page in January. Our 2018 Cardboard City was only lightly attended compared to those of the past and we raised $5,000, well below our hopes and needs. Let’s plan to make 2019 the big CC year!
Funds for Family Promise are made via pledges raised by the participants in order to use a box. (At: www.familypromisematsu.org ) It’s never too late to donate to help support our guests’ services and their case management Family Plans. Participants and businesses can compete to raise the most money in pledges. Please make a note on your gift that mentions Cardboard City.

You may be under the impression that homelessness is an illness from which our beautiful state could never suffer, but Family Promise Mat-Su would like you to know that homelessness is everywhere and could happen to just about anyone.
Family Promise is the only nonprofit organization in the valley dedicated to sheltering homeless families together, with their pets, and making sure they get right back on their once-fallen feet. They’ve been at it since 2005 and certainly know how it’s done since they’ve provided over 39,000* shelter bed nights since they’ve opened their doors.”-Grace Kari
