For the first time in 25 years, the choir programs at Maine East, Maine South and Maine West collaborated to present a District 207 Choral Festival. Singers from all three choir programs joined together to make music under the direction of guest conductor Ms. Sarah Jaewon Catt from Elmhurst University. Additionally, the students performed with guest artists from the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago (Suwan Choir) and Deokhwan Kim.

The goal was to create a platform for students across the district to share their passion for singing, learn from each other, give all students the opportunity to work with guest clinicians, conductors and artists in order to build a sense of community across the schools.

Due to Warning-Level Wind Chill, District 207 schools will implement remote learning on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Learn more about the expectations and plan for remote learning days: https://maine207.org/remotelearningforweather/ .

Remote learning days mean that students should not come to before school activities and practices. A decision on afterschool events will be made during the day on Tuesday, January 16.

As we continue to look each day at the winter weather, the safety of students and staff is the number one priority when making weather-related decisions about opening or closing school. District 207 consults with its five elementary District partners, and we work together to come to a consensus decision about opening or closing schools.

The current weather system has produced wind chill temperatures equal to and beyond the Warning-level of -30 degree Fahrenheit, which is the threshold that most suburban Chicago-area Districts follow.

Maine East History

Maine East was known as Maine Township High School when it was built in 1929 as a replacement for the original Maine Township High School, which itself had been built in 1902. Until 1959, when Maine West High School was built, it was the only school in the district.

In the early 1920s, Maine Township became the first high school in Illinois to teach courses in automotive repair and telegraphy.

During the Great Depression, most of the staff taught without financial compensation, as the district could not afford to meet salaries. As thanks, local merchants provided necessities to the staff free of charge.

In 1936, Maine East's band director, Alexander Harley, along with his wife Frances, founded Maine Music Masters as a way of honoring musicians in the school band. The idea spread and, in 1952, the chapters at individual high schools were incorporated as Modern Music Masters. In 1983, it was renamed Tri-M Music Honor Society. Today, it is the largest international honor society in music education.
